It's amazing how our conception of extinct life has changed just within my short lifetime. When I was a kid, images of Pakicetus showed it as a hairless, ocean-going creature, sort of like a strange hybrid of a manatee and river otter. Nowadays its shown as a furry, terrestrial hoofed rat type critter. I wonder how our ideas will change in the next twenty years.

If I remember right from the top of my head, they originally only found a skull, Gingrich and I -think- Uhen (not sure if he was involved, but I'm almost positive Gingrich was) identified it as a whale ancestor, so they drew it more like Ambulocetus and a few years ago they started finding full skeletons.
It always amazes me too though, epically dinosaurs. I'm dating myself here, but when I was a kid we still had pictures of big slow, lizards that only came in green, brown, or grey in our books.

Hey, they had dinosaurs like that when I was a young lad as well! "Jurassic Park" was the first time I'd ever seen a theropod in the correct horizontal posture.

I can't believe it took them that long to figure that one out, the animal couldn't have stood comfortably in that upright position. There's actually a lot of people angry over the portrayal of the raptors in Jurassic Park, kind of the way they're angry about the whole 'walking with' series. Personally, I think whatever gets people interested is a good thing- they'll find out the 'wrong' stuff on their own.
