“Yukio.. You really need some sle-”
you stopped, looking down at the raven-haired male, currently napping on the desk. His hair was tousled from the fan blowing beside him, the window only open a slight crack, yet it’s enough air he doesn’t complain.
You swallowed the lump in your throat before blowing out a shaky breath.
Since the news of his parents, he’s been constantly overworking himself, ensuring he made enough money to help support his father and grandmother, who lived together at their old home, as well as the two of you. It wasn’t easy the past couple years, between his mother’s death, friends from college and work betraying him, shredding what self-confidence he had left..
You could feel your heart breaking little by little.
However, you were strong.. He was strong, and that’s all you needed. You rubbed the soft bulge sticking out of your stomach, a reminder of what’s to be coming in the next few months.. Another reminder of why he’s been busting his ass off.
You just wanted him to have a break.
Walking towards him, you straightened up his papers, scattered across his desk from the blowing fan, helping him to the couch and allowing him to rest in your lap. You made sure to place a blanket on his lower body, not wanting him to catch a cold, before running your delicate hands through his soft, dark strands.
Watching him sleep made your heart race into a frenzy, the peaceful expression a reminder of when he wasn’t so stressed… When high school was a peaceful time compared to now. Granted, having the blonde, hyperactive ace to deal with was a chore, and a headache, but it was easier than this. And you wished you could return to that time to cherish the moment a while longer.
You heard him release a soft sigh, a gentle smile curling on his lips as he whispered one word,
“Okaa-san..”
You froze, wondering why he would whisper that word of all things, only to realize she must have done this to him whenever he was stressed. It was just that one phrase which broke the dam you’d kept around you for so long, but it too much for you to handle.
It started with one drop.. then another.. and finally, a river of tears flowed from your eyes, falling onto his cheeks as he slept peacefully. Cradling him in your hands, you bowed your head, a choked sob leaving your lips as you traced his skin with not just your fingers, but your lips and nose.
“I-I’m here Y-Yukio..” you swallowed, air rushing to your lungs as you clutched his shirt tighter, biting on your lip so you wouldn’t whimper, “I-I’m not going anywhere..”
Despite the rush of emotions flowing through your veins, racing straight to your heart, you didn’t stop caressing his hair, loving just how he’d finally smiled a sincere smile just for you with that one action..
It hurt to know he’d only ever look like this in his sleep, but you’d take that over not seeing it ever again. While your hand moved, your lips pressed against his, softly, hesitantly because you didn’t want to wake him from his slumber.
Pulling back, you grabbed the photo album of your high school and college days, flipping through each book as he laid there motionless. His chest a steady rhythm, reassuring you he was still there, still alive.
With each picture of his scowl, of his smile, you felt yourself slowly start to break even further, tears now soaking the pages.
“P…Please..” you gasped, linking your fingers with his. Why you said that word, you were unsure.. However, as you compared the Kaijou high school student, Kasamatsu Yukio, to the one now laying in your lap, the thought finally finished, manifesting into the one thing you refuse to say out loud.
“Smile for me.”
