your detail work is insane, what type of sculpting tools do you use for details on your work? any brands or specific types of tools that you would recommend looking into?Β

Sorry for the super late reply! I use a combo of tools but the majority of them are metal dental tools I ordered from eBay, cost less than $10 for a set of 15. My advice is to buy the dental tools and go from there. If you canβt achieve the details you want from those then you can look into more legit sculptor tools.

Itβs my pleasure. Just donβt be afraid to take chances with your tools..youβll find diversity in your tool kit will make for some quick work!

In a way the flesh looks almost more like gnarled wood than part of any real-world reptilian creatures. I approve, this is a gorgeous aesthetic. I'm getting vibes of Guillermo Del Toro's tragically unused alternative design for Smaug.

I was going for a more old-weathered look than the normal reptilian texture. Thank you for the kind words!

Iight how do you connect the wire to whatever base you use for the armature?
I want to get more into sculpting but I've only ever made bas reliefs.Β No clue how to make a free standing sculpture.
π: 0 β©: 1
Tiamatus In reply to cold-fused [2017-06-24 06:08:46 +0000 UTC]
I generally don't attach the armature to the base as I find doing so can make some portions of the sculpture hard to detail. I tend to go with sturdier armatures with heavier gauge wire for support.

cold-fused In reply to Tiamatus [2017-06-24 18:14:22 +0000 UTC]
If I may, this leads to my next question - how do you make the sturdier armature able to stand by itself?
I tried attaching sculpey to a styrofoam head.. That didn't work out too well as sculpey apparently dissolves styrofoam. It takes some time, but it does it. Scared the heck out of me
when I saw this mangled styrofoam head due to the sculpey..
The horrors...Β 0_o

Tiamatus In reply to cold-fused [2017-06-25 11:47:03 +0000 UTC]
I wouldn't use styrofoam as a filler as it can off gas in your oven and may damage the sculpey by doing so or cause you and anyone in your home health issue. I like to use aluminum foil as its inert to sculpey and doesn't rapidly expand in the oven which is key to not having a cracked sculpture.
For a freestanding sculpture use the heaviest gauge wire that you are able to work with for the main supports; things like limbs and the core of the body. If it's a small sculpture I would then bulk it out with aluminum foil to keep your clay costs down. If it's large you need to epoxy all the joints where you've twined the wire for you armature and may need to pre bulk with epoxy.

So do you create molds with your sculptures, or does Super Sculpey hold up on it's own?

Super sculpey after you bake it is a pretty tough material. I've not used any molds as of yet, but i'd like to try some time in the future.

Do you draw these out first then sculpt? Or do you just sculpt and design as you go?
π: 0 β©: 1
Tiamatus In reply to the-real-shame [2017-01-08 03:58:04 +0000 UTC]
Most of my sculpts have a bass sketch just sort of blocking out basic details and the overall "look" of the sculpt. The little details are sort of decided as I sculpt.

Thanks for sharing! That makes me feel better. I don't always have my end results in mind when attempting to create something and tend to just go with the flow on details.Β
