First thing first! When making a big sculpture, be sure to use the heaviest gauge wire that you can bend to shape. I use 10 gauge wire as my primary body support inner mixed with tubing and epoxy. The rods and screws on this guy are strictly me being over cautious, as this is one of my earliest large sculpts and the fear of sagging and cracking are always on my mind. The tubing are actually nipples and flanges that screw into one another so they just be unscrewed after baking. I pleaded a newer armature for my next big dragon which is a culmination of my experiences. It's heavy, but extremely strong.Β
My recommendations for you is to find the thickest wire you can to create your armature and be sure to bulk out your sculpt with aluminum foil to keep it light. Also, if you do use supports that leave marks, just paint on sculpey bond, it's a type of surface enhancing substance which allows you to apply fresh clay on your baked clay. The latter will allow you to cover over the marks.

Right! I remember when I first started getting into sculpture and my sculpts would warp and crack! It stunk! The time you take to make a proper armature is worth the effort. Nothing work than attempting detail work with a wobbly sculpt!Β
If if you need any tips or help, just throw a line.Β

Tiamatus In reply to ekows [2015-12-06 22:52:31 +0000 UTC]
Calve, as in mold making? If that what you mean I don't have any plans to replicate this. The size and nature of the armature would not allow for such application. The next dragon though..that will be replicated. Thank you for your kind words.

Well, the thing is..this guy at his highest point is only a tad under 12'' tall. When I designed it, I knew my oven was small, so its had to be planned into pieces. Thank you for your kind words and interest! Always feel free to drop a line!
