For the #Creature-Lovers weekly creature contest.
Theme: Elephant Eater

Called a Funua Mdomo by the locals, it uses its pronounced lower jaw in a sheering motion to bite the legs of elephants. The skin on the lower jaw has a high elasticity, allowing the jaw to clamp completely shut around the leg of an elephant, after which it secretes a specialized saliva into the wound that causes infection. To make up for their small size, Funua Mdomo hunt in packs of 5-15 members. Only a few members go in for the attack while the others focus on isolating the elephant from its herd. Once the target is infected, the Funua Mdomo pack will follow and harass their prey until it can no longer walk.

The spikes on its back, legs and tail are made of modified hair coated with a thick layer of keratin, like a porcupine's quills, and are thought to act as some degree of protection against the elephant's trunk.

The mouth and tongue are purple for the same reason as for a giraffe's tongue, which is believed to be caused by sunburn.
