Hey where did you get this katana?
I recently bought a sword from buyiaito.com and I'm expecting it to come in the near future. The tsuba looks like one I saw on there, did you also buy from them?
This is my first sword tho: [link]

In California, it is Legal to Carry Katanas [I would know, you just can't conceal the Katana]

Very Nice Katana. Not the best I've seen, but I'd bet it's good enough for Practice, unlike those Rat-tailed wall hangers... I hate those things. They defile all that is the majestic katana!

Not a bad shape and look for an iaito. Unless you know the type of steel and heat treatment, I would hesitate to do any heavy cutting with this one. Some of the swords on the "chenessinc.com" are through-hardened, and many display swords are made from stainless. Cutting with these can cause the tip to snap off and hurt people (just do a search on "cheap katana" on youtube).

I have read that Paul Chen blades are decent for cutting. Probably the lowest-end safely useable production blade there is.

Here are some good sites of modern craftsmen who make and mount japanese style blades: some work in fully japanese tradition:

[link]
[link] (howard clark, very popular blacksmith who uses a modern alloy to make super strong katana)
[link] (polisher)
[link] (saya maker and lacquerer)
[link] (in my opinion, an excellent blacksmith)

And here are some good pictures of real nihonto:

There are a lot more links but I think these are a good start. Enjoy. I'd like to learn iaido sometime, I did a little kendo before I decided to focus more on metalworking.

good buy man but if you want a shinken or one that is so close buy an "exclusive" paul chen practical it has twin mekuris for secure grip and the blade is very strong for 340$ its stronger than the one youve got no offence i own the same sword

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tigermano In reply to lanteen [2007-09-10 02:24:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. It's taken a while, but now I can clearly see how crappy this thing is. It's not as crappy as some other stuff I own, but it still is crap. I guess you learn with time, eh?

If it's shinogi-zukuri lacking shinogi, it's shobu-zukuri. Great piece!

Tigermano In reply to WikidWire [2006-11-20 07:01:02 +0000 UTC]

No problem. This sword isn't that great. You can learn alot by looking at good swords.
[link]
That gives information on the hamon(line caused by two different hardnesses and crystal structures of steel caused by clay tempering). Most modern display and martial art swords have etched(artificial) hamon. This site gives an overveiw of the different types.

[link]
This site gives alot of good info on tip configuration, types of true hamon, types of hada(for folded swords), and also some other terminology.

[link]
A good site for tang types, most modern swords have thinner, less substantial tangs. This is due tot he fact that most people don't actually use swords for fighting anymore.

[link]
A good site for sword anatomy and some baldes types as well as the different factors that determines whether a sword is katana or not.

[link]
A good site if you want to learn how to make your own sword fittings. I try to practice my handle wrapping just by roughing a wooden dowel to size and wrapping it. It's kinda neat when you do it well.

[link]
Goes through all the steps that make authentic, well polished japanese swords all nice and shiny. A very long process, one that I am trying to learn!

[link]
Another site for handle wrapping and such. It has more examples to choose from.

[link]
Some pictures of really nice modern swords, folded from iron sand(what the japanese traditionally had to use due to lack of resources), with good hamon and polish. These are a couple thousand dollars each, but are still cheaper than true modern art swords from japan. They are made in the tradtitional style, but are made cheaper in china!

Well, that's just some of the many bits of information out there. Well, hope this didn't blarg you out. Thanks for the comment.

Tigermano In reply to smokeART [2006-08-31 07:00:06 +0000 UTC]

Not with the right tools, but for the most part, making a katana by hand is very time consuming, and takes alot of patience.

Isn't that a Paul Chen? didn't think Paul Chen's had any Hada at all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tigermano In reply to Hyllyn [2006-02-08 08:16:45 +0000 UTC]

Not Paul Chen. Some of his folded series has hada. I think it was the kami katana... Anyways, this one was made by some other dude who has a forge down in china somewhere, with hundreds of underpaid smiths working for him.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hyllyn In reply to Tigermano [2006-02-08 14:18:45 +0000 UTC]

Ahhhh would it be Fred Chen? he's actually got some nice work if you visit a site called Huano Swords. If that be the same person.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tigermano In reply to Hyllyn [2006-02-10 07:12:37 +0000 UTC]

No, it's a lesser known person. The Hada on the blade is not really that noticable, and i was considering not even putting down that it had hada. I think I might take that off. It's a little misleading. I was really excited when i got the blade, so i may have over-represented some things.
