Description I love Invader Zim, and have been interested in reading some of Jhonen Vasquez's comics for awhile after hearing about them from friends, esp. ~ toastytook ... so when I (almost quite literally) ran into the Slave Labor Graphics booth at Comic-Con, I figured I'd pick something up, so I got the director's cut of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.

man I love that comic.

so I was at *spiritwolf77 's birthday party and I doodled Nny in ballpoint. yay. I was trying to capture the feel of Jhonen's style but not copy it... I think I succeeded with that more in the one on the right. either way, hoping to do better fanart of him sometime. -_-

He's right man, what are you doing reading JtHM when you're 12. :T I was 16 at least when I got the book.

I think you did quite well capturing the style, but still keeping it your own. I really like his face on the right Nny.

I suggest borrowing some of the individual comics from somebody, or buying them on your own, because the director's cut left some really funny strips out(I was pretty mad when I found that out, but I own all the individual's, so it doesn't bother me too much).

Glad you like the comic

Yeah, I was thinking of getting the individual ones if only for the cover art. XD I should have gotten them while I was there, they had all of them there... but I think I was running low on cash by then.

Yeah, it's good to get it for the cover art, because it's excellent.

I know Hot Topic sells those comics, and hot topic is damn near everywhere, so it'd be easy to pick the individuals up. The comic store by my house doesn't carry that many SLG comics, so I don't know about other comic stores.

I could check... I have two Hot Topics near me, a little one and a big one, and they seem to have Vasquez stuff off and on. I know I've seen JtHM individuals there before, but that was a long time ago. I would really like to find a way to get them without going through my parents, though. XD;

awww. At least the cover art of the director's cut looks pretty like.... can't think of the word for it, but it wouldn't grab you as being something bad. Pretty blue colors and it just has Z? and the initials JtHM on it. Unless you opened it up you wouldn't think twice about the contents of it. This is me hoping I can dodge my mother's questions about it as I don't think she'll be thrilled I bought that. nor would my therapist, actually *coughgag*. Bah, they don't have to know.

Mhm. But the individual ones have more Happy Noodle Boy comics. x3 And heh, for your sake, I hope neither of them ever find out. I know my dad was flat out pissed. xP But whoo, good luck with that. xD

Absolutely fantastic!
I think you captured the impact of Jhonen's style perfectly, while using your own unique form to bring more expression into the character.
and i love JTHM!!!!!
so...yeah
great job!!!

Damn that's awesome for pen work o_o I'm actually loving the one on the left, the post is very in character I think. You definately did very well capturing the essence of the style.

Invader Zim is just fun, and though I like some of the speeches Johnny gives I can't say I like much else of the comic (save for Nail Bunny). It has some good jokes, but I think it's because I've met so many people who take it too seriously.

Enough of my ramble, great work for sure.

thanks... the only thing I don't like about the one on the left that I didn't really realize until afterwards is that Johnny doing any sort of self-mutilation seems out of character, unless he's trying to kill himself. o.O or maybe I just don't recall him ever using a knife on himself.

They take it too seriously in what way?

meowthgal In reply to tigrin [2004-07-26 06:41:01 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I guess I didn't look hard enough to notice that.

They take some of the things Johnny says too seriously, or automatically accept his views on things (when their views might normally be the opposite). I understand being influenced, but I know a few friends and schoolmates who take things too far..

meowthgal In reply to tigrin [2004-07-26 22:08:21 +0000 UTC]

No, that's understandable. My best friend is in love with the series (probably another reason I'm bored of it), and we debate our views on it all of the time.

Well my biggest grudge for it comes from my best friend's boyfriend bringing it into my AP history class and letting students read it. One of my classmates, who I used to be very close with and still get along with, ended up with it and read some of it. The violent images shocked her, and for some reason she now has the idea that anyone that dresses "differently" (pardon that stereotypical word, I couldn't think of anything else) is obsessed with it, and supports violence and other hateful actions. Naturally that's a big over exaggeration, but I just took it a bit too personal because I'm still shocked that she would think of me as a bad person since she used to know me so well.

Like I said, I loved Invader Zim and I love the Johnny style, I just have handful of personal issues against it. Everyone has their own opinions and that's what makes this world great.

ahh. that's jumping to conclusions a little bit, isn't it? o_o;; I don't dress fashionably but that doesn't mean that I lynch people in my spare time.

I don't think JtHM endorses violence... I can't really explain why I like it. in a way it's a guilty pleasure of mine, kind of like The Punisher comics... I have a lot of repressed anger/violence, I guess you could say... from being hurt... and there are so many times that I get tired of being a doormat and repressing my emotions and just wish I could flip around the power ladder. get some control over my life and what happens to me. make those people experience what they put me through. I don't think violence is the way to work with people or release your emotions, though... it solves just as much as being a doormat. I think you get a glimpse of that in the comic, that violence is NOT going to change the way someone is. once a jerk, always a jerk, really. sticking a knife through someone isn't going to change that. there's always going to be someone to criticize you but you can't let it ruin your life or hold it against them to that point. like you said, everyone has their own opinions.
