FINALLY! My end of an art trade with It took me a really long time! It's her lovely ferret friend, Nightshade!I had to draw it in colored pencils. I drew it out in pastels and there was such a lack of definition in her fur, that she just looked boring and flat. I hope you don't mind the medium change!
My first attempt at doing this type of furry creature, so please, be kind??
Also, when the image scanned, it decided that it was a good idea to make the image 9 MB. I had to resize it and save it as a JPG, so I'm sorry if it interferes with the quality.

This is a very charming drawing, and I really like the sentiment. Just a few things I want to note though:
First off, you mentioned wanting to get more definition in the fur, and to be blunt it kind of needs it. Try using some more darks. In the white areas, add some warm grey streaks, get some value in there. Same thing with the brown. It looks like you did this on brown paper, no? Instead of filling the brown fur with a single lighter brown, use the paper color more by just adding high and low lights while keeping the median color the bare paper.
Second, the eyes. The one on the right (Nightshade's left) is great: nice black, excellent glare. The other eye isn't quite up to par. It looks like you tried to work the glare too much and it got kind of muddled. With glare, less is often more. A more defined glare on an eye (hard edges like that on the right) make the eye look wet and reflective, as eyes are. Also, I don't know if ferrets' noses are wet like dogs, but if they are you want to glare there too.
