I like this one, the black/white works well and the composition is simply very good.
Keep up the good work.

Erm, here we go, currency conversions. I expect it would come to a shade over USD3000 all up. I only have the one lens for it at this point, as it's a different mount than my Ricoh. It's a 17-85mm general purpose jobby, quite versatile really and full of bells and whistles like image stabilisers n' stuff. I'm looking to grab a decent telephoto for outdoor and event/sport work and perhaps a wide angle, but that last is just a bit of a wish I think.

*yawns widely* i just woke up...XD
anyway, back on subject...i don't think i've ever had $3000 all at once in my entire life XD
perhaps i should start saving...

I agree, but in this case I'm sure it was just sloppy work. The painter/handyman/whoever couldn't be bothered to remove the fittings before painting. Mind you, I can half sympathise - varnish is not the easiest substance to work with..

It should come through.
Since I've only been a database programmer for about six months now, I'm fascinated by large DB apps like DA. Most database platforms have some system for prioritizing database queries, and I've noticed that as far as I can tell, DA seems to take full advantage of this, since they're running on barely adequate resources.
That means that some things that are more essential get prioritised higher than others. For example, comments seem to be a high priority, being processed on the database in a matter of seconds. Probably the lowest priority that I've noticed would be the removal of commented deviations from the deviant watch list. Somewhere down the list is the 'favourites' function. I've noticed that, like devwatch updates, sometimes they don't show up for a few minutes.
You've probably noticed that sometimes when you leave a comment, the database query doesn't get processed in time for your comment to appear on the subsequent impression of the page. Lots of people get thrown by this and type the same comment in twice because they think it hasn't worked. It's a sign of a very stressed database.

Yeh I had noticed the comment lag, and had drawn the same conclusions with regard to dangerously high database load. Considering the user base, the load must be phenomenal. Every now and then it seems things go awry and pages aren't delivered for what appears to be more than simple query timeout reasons (ie it's not just a single page, rather there's no domain response at all). Not too sure I'd want to be on the DA IT team!
I find it surprising that the administration are so forthcoming when they're so desperately in need of resources. Sure you need to keep existing users and attract new ones, but if that's done at the expense of the business, the site becomes overloaded and everyone loses.

In my opinion, they're not doing enough to capitalise (on behalf of the community) on the massive resource of artwork they have here. The print sales are a start I guess, but they're a less than imaginative way to sell art. I think with over 9000 registered users, and high six figures of general visitors, they must be doing something wrong if they're not raking it in.
I sometimes send them ideas on other forms of income that don't compromise the principles of the place, but don't get any reaction. Maybe I should try sending more formalised and detailed proposals.
Eg: I'm a designer and I use stock photo services fairly often. I wouldn't, however, consider using anything from DA, because I'd have to go to the trouble of negotiating a specific deal every time I want to use someone's image. The stock library that I use most charges US$1-3 per HQ image download. If they gave people an option to designate their work as being available for this purpose, they'd instantly be the best commercial image resource on the net.
Also, just general stuff like underuse of advertising space as a source of revenue. They need a business manager. It's a bit like a multi-million dollar football club that's run by a board of ex-footballers - they wonder why they end up in financial trouble. I think it's a bad sign that everyone on the admin staff has their own DA page of quality artwork!
