The very very fine lines, like the ones that make up Cyclops' gloves, are those quick or slow movements when you ink? Inking amazes me, and you're a true pro at it.

Perfect...After Mad, and Bachalo, I'd put Brandon on your perfect match list. He's got slick pencils and you've got slick inks and together..it's um.....slick!! All the work you've done with Brandon has been a thing of beauty.

Hey Tim. Awesome work.
I'm trying to better my coloring skills and I need as much practice as I can get.
The entire piece looks like it would be interesting to color.
Could I give it a shot?

SWEET! ... Would you object to me trying to color this image? I am looking for some good line art to work from.

You mean to tell me that Brandon pretty much pencilled every stubble and hair on wolverine the way you see it before it you inked it?
I swear I'd get all bug-eyed 1/3 way into it!
Fantastic work!

excellent work, ive asked some other inkers and thought id get ur opinion. what is the best way to ink a pencil drawing? freehand, with stencils/templates? the bottom line is how do u get the hatching done and how do u get ur lines so perfect and uniform. i cant imagine it being done free hand. if u have an answer and some insight, im all ears.

TimTownsend In reply to RCarter [2008-08-08 01:38:50 +0000 UTC]
The best way to ink is up to the individual. Brush? Nib? As for the hatching, etc. you just have to get your hand control down. That where the years of practice come in and why not every Joe Shmo' on the street can do it. You can use stencils, etc. but they'll end up sucking the life out of the art the same way digital inking does. 99.9% of inkers are doing the vast majority of the work free hand. You can usually tell where a curve or template is used. They do have their place.

thanks i guess ill have to apply some of my printmaking etching skills to inking lines, in that i need to be more controlled and careful with what im doing. thanks for the input

My pleasure. Control is the name of the game when it comes to inking. Youre in TOTAL control of the art and you need total control of your tools to achieve your goals. Best of luck!

thanks, right now im using mostly microns pens and sharpie for the large areas, if i switch to bristol board rather than copy paper, any suggestions to materials to pick up for inking? i was thinking about getting into the brushes and looking at inking like painting or watercolor. but what are the other options? pros and cons?
π: 0 β©: 1
TimTownsend In reply to RCarter [2008-08-09 21:47:25 +0000 UTC]
the standard tools of the trade are brush, nib, tech' pens, ink, and bristol board. Using ink is nothing like water color unless youre doing washes...which isnt inking. Ink is black. Its either black or its not there. Youre using line work to trick the eye in to seeing shade of gray that dont exist. Youre using thick and thin lines to fool the eye in to seeing depth that doesnt exist. And so on. If you truly want to learn how to ink put down the markers and tech pens (they do have their place but, for a beginner, fight the fundamental basics of inking by their sheer nature) and pick up a brush or nib. I recommend choosing one or the other. Theyre completely different from one another and to try and get a grip on both at once would be spreading yourself thin. Buy some books on the subject. Study up on what inking actually is. Learn the basics. Buy some of the DVD's out there. Joe Weems has a great one. Just do your research and get a solid foundation beneath you first. So many people just flail around aimlessly thinking that its just slapping random lines down on a page and then they get frustrated and walk away when they cant master it in a week. It will take years of steady practice and patience. Best of luck!
