The way you did the grass on the hill side is friggin sick! So many inkers nowadays would take the easy route and just kinda phone in areas like that, but you knock it out of the park. Great work!!!

Thanks very much!! For some reason that tends to be the type of stuff that pulls me in, trying to find new ways to add depth to a page. Its not the most productive route to take in terms of speed but it makes for a pretty page. 8) Love your work, btw!

I have been a huge fan for a long time. I have nothing but respect for inkers. I have been trying to learn the art for a long time. I guess you can tell I am a penciler by nature. I talk to, and get photocopies from, as many pro inkers as I can. I want my inks to look clean and crisp, like you pros make them look. I just can't get that "Pro" look for some reason.
I am getting a little better though. i am fortunate enough to be friends, and have worked with, Ryan Winn, who studied under Miki, and Weems. I call Ryan up and pick his brain every now and then.
Sites like this one are amazing as well. I spent at least 3 hours looking at you stuff last night.
Thanks for the kind words about my work, coming from you, that means a hell of a lot! I have spent years busting butt for all of the smaller companies, like Dark horse, image, Devils Due, and just about every other small company you can think of, but hey, I love the work. i consider myself fortunate to be able to do this full time. Recently i have been picking up work, and getting interest, from some of the big guys. I just finished up some work for top cow, I was asked to do some stuff over at Spawn, and I Just turned in my first Spider-man cover. i am excited as hell about that one. They are going straight to colors on t though I think that takes away from the finished image. With out inks it just doesn't look finished.
I studied the covers you did with Campbell before doing my cover up. I think the covers you guys did, are hands down the best spidey covers in a long long time!
Well I will stop my geeking out. Thanks for the reply, and take care.

Yeah I would love to be able to tell the marvel guys that I absolutely have to have an inker. I did try to get one though. I told them that ryan winn said he would ink it for free, just so we could work together again. I also suggested a few other guys I knew, but it was a no go. My editor just sent me over the colors this morning, and they turned out ok. It would have looked a helluva lot better if it were inked. I used a dark and spooky setting on the cover, and was going for a certain creepy feel. the colorist almost got it going directly over the pencils. If it had been inked it would have captured what I was going for completely. Oh well it still turned out ok. As soon as get the go ahead I'll show it to ya.
I was so touched by what my son did. I sent an email over to jim Mclauchlin because I figured he'd get a kick out of it. I have been talking with him quite a bit since the hero initiative helped me out. Next thing I know I get an email from him with a link in it. He had told newsarama about what my son did, and they wrote up a story on it. The auction went nuts then.
well sorry for going on and on again. I'll shut up now
take care

I love seeing how you fine tune the lines, and the way you put your own stamp on it, like the texture on the dirt, amazing!

that is some ART!
hey I have a question for you - I'm working on some fill in pages in Photoshop. If those black and white/grayscale pages are adjusted to be blue (or whatever), is it possible for an inker to get the digital copies off the ftp and ink them? Just curious...

Making blue line copies to ink is definitely doable but you need super high rez' scans to print from. Some guys do it this way.
