Designed as the successor to the Kracken-class Heavy Assault StarCruiser , the Leviathan-class StarCruiser was the Quadrachion Empire's answer to the growing number of Imperial-class Star Destroyers used by the Galactic Empire. While neutral during the Clone Wars, only participating in a few border skirmishes against both the Galactic Republic, and Confederacy of Independent Systems, the Quadrachion Empire learned from observing the conflict. The initial drafts of the Leviathan-class took these lessons to heart, but when the Galactic Republic won the war, and transitioned into the Galactic Empire, things changed.

For starters: the Galactic Empire was far more aggressive than it predecessor, and expanded militarily where ever possible. Sovereign nations that once felt safe residing next the Old Republic where among the first to be engulfed by the Galactic Empire. Those who allowed this subjugation where treated "fairly well" though those who opposed, and resisted were put down mercilessly. Soon it was only a matter of time before the Galactic Empire started pressing on the Quadrachion Empire's borders as well. A key assets to the Galactic Empire's expansions, and occupation of the known galaxy was down to its large flotilla of large capital ships. Thus the Leviathan-class was redesigned for more capital ship orientated engagements. Heavy armor, stronger shielding, more powerful weaponry, and more armaments were only a few improvements over the older Quadrachion ships. However, all this extra firepower, and armor came at a cost as the Leviathan-class was now far heavier, and slower than the older ships.

In the end, while the ship wasn't seen as a true success story, nor as a true contender to the Imperial-class Star Destroyer, the need for a heavy capital ship, to at least, keep the Galactic Empire back was too high, and thus the ship was accepted into service. Production ran from 15 BBY to 7 BBY, with over 5,700 models built, when a successor could be designed.
