During the Russo-Finish war (the Winter War), the decision was made to accept and produce the KV-1 heavy tank , however, upon running into difficulties such as fortified bunkers, the General Staff ordered a special variant armed with a heavy howitzer to help solve this problem. It was decided to keep the KV-1's turret ring and design a new turret around the massive 152.4mm howitzer. This granted the KV-2 an unmistakable shape, but also hinder the tank greatly. The sheer size of the turret made the tank very top-heavy and cobbled together with the fact the KV-2 used unmodified KV-1 hulls, the tank's mobility was terrible. It should be no surprise then that as the factory relocated to the Urals during the German invasion, the KV-2's production was halted with only 203 units built.

Despite this, during the later stages of the Winter War, and the earlier stages of WWII for the Soviets, the KV-2's armor was near impenetrable with reports coming in that nothing but the largest guns could destroy them. For the Germans, all they could do was try and disable the tank and pray the crew abandoned the tank, though this didn' always happen. In the end, it was the tank's sheer weight (weighed over 50-55 tons), the tank's horrible reliability, as well as how expensive it was that finally killed the tank.
