Description India ink and Citadel acrylics on 160g Daler Rowney A4 paper.

Trying out some ideas for the Space-Revived chromatic contest, where a lot of my preferred methods in space art seem unlikely to work.

Space Art Contest: Chromatic!Space-Revived Presents... THE CHROMATIC CONTEST
At long last, the new Chromatic Contest arrives, open to all members of Space-Revived!
The theme is completely open to your imagination, with a twist: you must use only ONE OR TWO COLOURS in your space artwork. Your space art may represent anything you can imagine, but the most important thing is to champion your choice of colour.
Image: SalmonickAtelier
Rules:
• You must be a member of Space-Revived to participate. However, everyone is welcome to join!
• Submit your work to our Chromatic folder.
• State in your description that the image was made for the Chromatic contest with a link to this journal.
• Two entries per deviant allowed, but only one can win.
• All entries must be created after October 14

Will probably make a new scan once I have access to my regular scanner again.

Today I am thankful...

... for friends with a backup scanner. Very thankful!
... for craft shop dealers who know their emulsions.
... for fortunate connections.

Why, thank you <3 I didn't have any good white ink when I painted this, so the stars are all drawn individually.

Whoa, the detail in this is incredible!  It must've taken a good chunk of time. I think the spacecrafts are the greatest touch!

Thank you <3

If I do not recall wrong, took about fifteen hours in four sessions. The ships were a real treat to draw - gotten fond of this design style in the last few years.

Very well done linework and stars! I love the contrast between the fine lines and rough/washes in the background.

Why, thank you.
This was one of my first large inks in over a decade, and only my second using a dip pen, so very glad to hear you enjoy that particular aspect. Made this one to try out some design methods that came to good use later.

That looks like those stars too forever. I love the feeling of this.

Thank you. It was a lot of fun to paint as well, and learned quite a bit too.

The character is returning, although vastly changed (weasel instead of fox).

Thank you, and very much so. This means especially much to me coming from you, knowing you are familiar with some of the pictures that inspired this piece, and knowing it pales in comparison to some of them.
But with your encouragement, I intend to narrow that gap.

Tinselfire In reply to WindySilver [2017-11-24 22:38:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, and absolutely no worries. Sometimes, not having the words is not a bad thing at all.
Not many people know this, but when a compliment is very specific, but not also elaborate and a bit critical, it can actually become dangerous instead - it can cling and make people forget to keep improving the things that already look good.
Now, I know exactly what I need to work on instead. I just have to make sure the digital version remains magnificent, gorgeous, and fantastic -.o

You're most welcome! ^_^ And that's true, actually. I've never thought of that. Keep up the great work, and sorry for falling behind with your journals and other stuff I'm getting seriously behind with them atm and it's only getting worse

Golly gee! You really outdid yourself with your inking! Gorgeous stars, whimsical clouds, and amazing ships passing by are done in spectacular fashion! I can forget the fox character being surrounded in all this fantastical glory!

Tinselfire In reply to theJfluffy [2017-11-24 21:24:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, and indeed, "outdid" is a word that feels very appropriate. The only ink I had to work with at the time was not waterproof, so I had to leave out the smallest stars one by one instead of drawing them with Sakura pen. Was good fun and quite happy with the results, but took a lot longer than it should have.

By comparison, painted with waterproof ink this sky took a few hours instead of a few days.

In other words, true to the title, t'was a good exercise o.-

Why, thank you.
There is a digital version in the works, which will be quite different, but if you might be interested it will use many of the same concepts.
We shall see if I leave the setting on "stun"...

Neutral-Underground [2017-11-01 04:25:51 +0000 UTC]

Wow, this is a very intricate work. I found this one through the Project Comment group and I am quite dazzled. Through the use of primarily only black and white you have created quite the multi-dimensional piece. The central fox figure (who I will now refer to as the Mistress of the Stars) is a powerful figure who looms over what I can only imagine as her domain, and this helps the work gives off a sense of strength and grandeur. Seeing the rockets zoom by and seeing them be so small in comparison to the Mistress of the Stars give even more a sense of her majesty, and having the outward design in the stars radiate from her makes it look as though the center of the galaxy itself is right here, the Mistress of the Stars. To know that this was only an 'exercise' in vector work only impresses me further, as most times I can't achieve a good result without lots of practice in any form of art.

The stars in the background as well are stunning, with some blazing in brightness only surpassed by the majesty of the Mistress of the Stars herself. Now, one point of possible improvement may come in the trails leading off the rockets. I personally feel that it may flow nicer if they were to come from behind the Mistress somewhere, curving into the path they are currently on instead of being straight shots that seem to not really come from anywhere. This is only a minor issue though (if you could even call it that) and it really only takes down the most minute elements of the image. The rockets themselves are very proficiently designed, and while it may not be the most original design, it is a very efficient design and one that looks very natural in comparison to the rest of the image.

Overall, I feel that this work is a beautiful representation of my favourite aspects to your work, with it's sense of grandeur, it's intricate design, and it's visionary take on sci-fi.

You truly do seem to have a firm grasp on your own style of work, and I will be looking forward to what your release in the future.

Thank you, and forgive me for returning to you very, very late.

The concept has evolved a lot since, with some changes to the character and composition - you may find the sketches in my scrapbook. Your thoughts on the scale and rocket trails were very useful, I daresay to the point of being solutions to certain issues. While I intend to keep the now-musteline character unnamed and the title of the finished piece an understatement, with your permission I will adopt Mistress of the Stars as the character's office.
Your thoughts on the starships are very appreciated and reassuring, especially that the designs are not the most original, as I intended a model-like appearance. Their appearance has been somewhat altered, but from your descriprion I know I was right to retain the concepts.

Thank you, and should my schedule allow, I hope not to keep you waiting for too long.

Planetrix [2017-10-28 18:33:42 +0000 UTC]

This is a truly interesting piece.  I like the subject matter and your technique, though I'm trying to decide if the foxy lady is supposed to be a nebula, constellation or something else.  My only "complaint" is that the rockets get a little bit lost in her cloak.  Compared to the surrounding space, they have very little contrast and are a bit hard to see.  Honestly not sure how to fix them, either.  But my gods -- look at those stars!!   Nice work.

Tinselfire In reply to Planetrix [2017-11-15 13:15:49 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, and it is especially good to hear there is a bit of confusion -.o I originally intended the character to be superimposed as a symbolic majestic figure, but while showing the sketches to a group of friends I noticed a lot of confusion if "the fox is really big or the ships really small".
While I usually work strictly with depiction and have a hard time convincing people there is no hidden meaning or symbolism, on this occasion people jumped to the conclusion that the parsec-tall vixen was physically there!
That was too humourous to exclude.

The rocketships are indeed hard to see, and this is altogether my own fault since I left them unshaded. At the time, I did not have a tool with a fine enough point to work on that scale, and the ink I used had a tendency to create globs under the nib (you can see some of this on the pipe and on the berries in the crown). In the digital version they will be metallic and sharply lit with two colours - and perhaps a dash of cosmoskitty's gemstones to give a hint of reflected stars rushing by.

I am especially glad you enjoyed the stars. Since the purpose of the exercise was testing out highly saturated starry backgrounds as a means to guide the eye, the stars are indeed the stars of the scene.

I LOVE this thing!

The stellar flair to it as well as how massive it is, makes this awesome.

Why, thank you - and indeed, I am very glad you noticed the scale.

I must say, it does amuse me seeing people scratching their heads whether the vixen is symbolic or just a really big girl -.o

Thank you, and indeed, this is a wish you may be surprised to hear is already granted - or at least in a way.

There is no direct reference, but there certainly is a lot of 1950's tokusatsu poster imagery at work here, some of which survived into the 70's and 80's in book covers as the style fell out of favour in cinema. Perhaps it persists even today. The trove of domestic sci-fi literature that never comes abroad is a lot larger in Japan than most elsewhere.

Now, the question is what this book might be called...
