Description Names 1 - Orange

“My father loves me very much,” the First Imperial Prince of His Majesty’s Interstellar Onoway Empire, Nadir Onoway Tiir Ayawir, tells the baby he’d found while walking around outside early that morning. His advisors and caretakers hadn’t been pleased to see him coming in through the palace doors and had been even less pleased to see him holding what they believed was an animal. But the animal was no animal, Nadir insisted, for what he held now in his arms couldn’t possibly be a creature, but his secret wish come true.

He’s locked in his room now for what he’d said to his advisors when they asked what he had in his arms, shivering and wet from being in the rain. He knows, though he shouldn’t, that if he takes the throne too late, he will be the last of the Ayawir line. There is something about him that makes him different from his father, from his uncles and cousins. It is why he is put by himself in an estate of his own, with people to look after him. Why he is not allowed to go on long walks, why he is small and cannot keep on weight even if he tries to eat as much as he can before he feels sick. Why he wears glasses, and most of all, it is why his father does not speak to him, does not look at him, does not visit him.

Nadir is not supposed to know these things.

The baby is finally warm and dry, but Nadir holds him close and bundles him up in soft blankets.

“He’s a very busy man, that’s why he doesn’t invite me over very often. Or come here..”

Cooing, the baby nuzzles against him and looks up at him with sleepy eyes. Nadir rubs his head, feeling soft fur and downy feathers.

“I’ll love you very much too. You’re-” Nadir realizes he is about to say something his father hasn’t said to him in as long as he could remember. “You’re my son, after all.”

He’d claimed the child as his own when he found him, announced to them all that he was adopting an alien into the family, to be his son. The unspoken reasoning being that because he would likely never have a child of his own was obvious in the way he made it final that the baby, still unnamed, would be his heir. His word is final in this estate, his own private section of his father’s empire. While his advisors may order him to doctors and his room, they have no control over his lineage. With no interference from his father, he is free to choose his own heir. It certainly isn’t the first time a willful royal has decided to take in an outsider, his own father was adopted by the previous king before him, and his advisors cannot change the precedent.

“You need a name. I wonder what name you would like… Hm… Father named me for the great god of the fallen world he hailed from, but I don’t know much about the old legends. I was too sick and little when Father would read to me. Oh, I probably shouldn’t call him Father to you. I’m your father, not him.” The baby is starting to fall asleep, so Nadir leans back against the wall and rocks him. “Your grandfather probably wouldn’t be too thrilled with me copying his idea… Besides, Nadir Tiir is a name with a lot of meaning for your grandfather. Any legendary names wouldn’t have much feeling for me.”

He’ll have to ask his advisors for the book of legends. He’s suddenly unsure if he’s right about the origin of his name. It’s a name from a legend, but maybe not that of a great god. Nadir wonders about this sudden feeling of confidence, to think of his father possibly naming him for a god. He decides that fatherhood does truly suit him. But that is something to dwell on later. For now, coming up with a name for his own child...

Nadir sighs. “Naming babies is hard. My advisors said your grandfather named me when the doctors told him I wasn’t going to live, but you’re perfectly healthy. Sure it took a while earlier to figure out what you like to eat, but you’re doing really well after being abandoned in the rain! Oh!” That was it- something meaningful. “The first food you ate, that fruit I’d never seen before that the advisors didn’t mean to order- one of my cousins is named after a food, so it isn't weird. I’ll name you Orange! Orange Onoway Ayawir!”

The baby coos in his sleep, content in his arms, and Prince Nadir feels a warmth inside of himself he doesn’t believe he’s ever felt before.
