Description First appearance: Episode 47 (ムーン復活! 謎のエイリアン出現/Moon Revived! The Mysterious Aliens Appear)
Voice actor: Hikaru Midorikawa

Ail was an alien created by the Makaiju. He and his sister An were young children when the rest of the Makaiju's offspring were wiped out in a conflict. They assumed responsibility for the tree's care, but didn't understand how to nurture it properly, leading them to drift from one planet to another, harvesting energy an way they could. They eventually arrived on Earth and began using Cardians to gather energy from the population.

Upon coming to Earth, Ail adopted the guise of Seijuurou Ginga. Ail was in love with An, but their relationship was a turbulent one, especially as he was also very vocal about his interest in Usagi.

It's the Makaiju arc! When I was first getting into Sailor Moon, popular opinion was that this was a low point for the show: a hastily-improvized storyline to fill space until the real story could resume with the Black Moon arc. However, this has come to be one of my favorite sections of the series, and definitely the best part of Sailor Moon R. The arc was directed by Junichi Satou, which explains its first season feel, and I like the fact that the ending of the previous season isn't glossed over but actually gets some exploration and takes some time to resolve. The first episode is particularly good, with Luna's reluctance to restore Sailor Moon's memories, and Usagi's perfectly performed reaction to getting them back. And remember: this was still Kae Araki subbing for Kotono Mitsuishi.

As for designs, I'm very fond of Ail and An's appearance despite (or perhaps because of) them looking as if they've just fallen out of some aggressively eighties cartoon like Jem...

I totally agree about this arc- I like it almost as much as the Dark Kingdom arc. They did a beautiful job picking up after that one- the scene at the end of the first episode, where Usagi is crying about remembering everything that happened and realizing it's going to continue, and basically says goodbye to her childhood, is some heart-wrenching stuff. I really like that they didn't just ignore the ending of the previous season and rush the characters back into their powers as soon as possible (even though they only had a few episodes to do it in!).

It seems like any time this writing team got a chance to expand on the characters, they did a wonderful job- the whole arc with Naru, Umino, and Nephrite, the character development of Zoicite, and so many wonderful little moments throughout. Here we get to see their original work, and honestly, it's quite good!

Speaking of which, it's also nice that they squeezed a lot of little appearances of Naru and Umino in there. Ever since episode 26 (with Youma Boxy), I think Umino might just be my favorite character in the series... it's a shame the two of them sorta phase out gradually after this. But there's still that 'pro-wrestling' gag to look forward to.

Thanks for making all these- it's really great to see every last character in the show represented this way.
