I wish I had some more markers though~ you can't mix them like colored pencils.

That's true about the marker/pencil thing. On the other hand anime artists all insist on using Copic Markers- which are not bad but I always preferred the Tria Pantone markers (expensive as they are).
It's interesting- they do have coloured pencil WATERCOLOURS. I would experiment with those if I had any skills with a real brush at all but since I don't I'm staying digital! (Though I suppose I could learn with practice).
Can't get the colour range though with pencils that I can get digitallly.

I have a set of 24 Prismacolor markers, which work pretty well. But I like the brush tip of the Copics more than the chisel tips of the Prismas. Plus, it might just be the set I have-- but the colors just seem so DARK. I've been purposely buying Copics in lighter colors to help balance things out. I don't know if I've seen the Tria markers at the store before or not... Only 2 stores around here carry the Copics to begin with, and only one of those places takes coupons (which is where I go xD)
I have a TON of colored pencils, so I can get a lot of colors there. but it's a lot more time-consuming than markers.

I may have to break down and buy me some copic markers one day just to play around for "giggles". But I do all my stuff digitally now once I scan in the original pencil. So not sure when I'll do that.
Tria markers are based on the Pantone Colour Matching System- colours that easily reproduce in a four-colour process (CMYK -- I have a background in this). Tria markers are also $5 apiece- you can get ink refills for $8 that will let you refill a single marker several times. But eventually you will still need to replace the marker or at least the tips.
I believe Tria is also alcohol-based. And they have an inking marker that is water-based or something so that the colour markers don't smear the "illustrator" marker and visa versa.
What gets me about CMYK btw-- it's a 4 colour process (what your standard inkjet printer uses, no duh! lol!), cyan (c or process red), magenta (m or process blue), yellow (y), and black (k), And it actually has a much smaller pallette of colours than RGB! Always wondered how the heck that works anyways! lol! OK, I'm being "geeky!" lol! (I earned a certificate in Desktop Publishing years ago- was going to go into printing, but...)
I've used Tria and Prismacolour together- to compliment each other's respective colour pallettes. I had to go to Tria markers though for more realistic skin tones- Prismacolour just doesn't have them to me.
I still got my old markers- haven't used them in years. Wonder if they still work? If they do I may mess around with Copic a bit- but as expensive as Copic is- they are thin, so I imagine they run out of ink rather fast?

wow! very nice, I just started with markers as well but my result is much worse. I still need to grab the tecnique.
When you say that you used white paint, what kind of paint do you mean? thanks
about the guf, I think that it could be the position of the head, if the face is completely frontal and horitzontal it should be exactly centered with the neck, I think it should be a bit more on the left.
Great work!

I used acrylic paint, with some water blended in so it wouldn't be so thick. I just mixed them together on a little palette (or a plate would work), then flicked the brush bristles against my fingertip. An old toothbrush works well too. (Obviously one you wouldn't use again, lol) Make sure to put down some newspaper or something because it will go all over!
No, her face is about where it should be. The model had the same positioning of her neck and face. Her body is turning to the side, so that's why the neck is where it is. The lil' goof I had was with the coloring, but I won't say where ^^

No problem~ I saw the technique for the splattering in a tutorial somewhere on the site. She had said poster paint works too. I used acrylic paint since that's what I had- and both are fairly similar anyway. Oh another thing-- if there's parts of the pic you DON'T want splattered, I covered it with sticky notes, just torn into the shape/size I needed. I didn't want much splatter on her face, so I covered that area.

Yeah I suppose that's true, but the material of her dress is pretty thin, and if she's moving to the side like that (as her hair suggests), the dress could be moving that way as well. Or, we can just say it's the magic of anime/manga clothing ;D

eh i can't see the mistake either, must be something really minor.you say the scanner didn't get the iridescence? well that's too bad,i'm sure it would have looked great.well the dress still looks ok and she's got a funny face there haha

tira-chan In reply to WingedDivinity [2010-09-21 21:07:51 +0000 UTC]
Yeah the iridescent stuff actually looks kinda green-ish in the scan, which bugs me. Luckily it's not that bad (I played with the colors and contrast a bit after I scanned it)
But yeah the lil' mistake i was worried about isn't too noticeable on this size of the image. in the full size when I scanned it, i thought it looked horrible. I had tried to cover it and that just looked even more odd xD; The model I worked from had both eyes open, but her hair in this pic wound up in her face, hence the right eye being closed ;D
