I checked it out ^^ It was a result of the wars During the Napoleonic Wars, a French newspaper, La Monde I believe, offered a reward to anyone who could find a cheap easy way to transport food. Nicolas Appert discovered food cooked in glass jars did not spoil unless the seal leaked, and it started there... But glass was difficult to transport, and later factories started using wrought iron canisters (cans)and cylindrical tins. Before the can opener, soldiers had to cut them open with bayonets or smash them with rocks

did teh introduction of tinned food, by any chance, have anything to do with the wars going on at the time?

Some tinned foods have tabs on them. No clue how they made them in the 1800's, though.
