Description Taken at the Akron Zoo - Akron, OH

Too often when I'm working on a photo of an animal at the zoo, I'm thinking about making the colors pop, getting the nice deep tones to the photo and yet in all that I forget that sometimes an animal can look beautiful in plain black and white. This is one of two from this trip that I've converted so and I really like how this turned out. There were just enough shadows to give a nice contrast--and maybe it could have had even more contrast, but I like the overall appearance of how this turned out very much. I hope that you do too!

I think the B/W was a great choice here. I love the regal feel of this impressive animal, and I think it comes across better in shades of grey than in color. There is more of a feel to it. Excellent choice!

Thanks!! I forget too often to try and convert to black and white and I think I need to challenge myself for a week's worth of shooting to do only black and white to keep that mindset always in the back of my mind.

That would be an interesting project. I've never shot B/W but just look during postprocessing at whether an image works in B/W. I would think that, to purposely shoot B/W, you'd have to pay more-or different-attention to light, shadows, and color values. But I'm sure you can do it well; if you can think in infrared, you certainly should be able to think in black and white. I guess both are good ways to stretch and exercise your photographic eye.

What's funny is that the past couple of weeks I was disenchanted with my photography and I think it was because 1. I hadn't been to the zoo in forever, what's up with that!!! and 2. I hadn't been challenging myself too much because I hadn't gone back to IR or found something new to learn. Well I went back to the zoo and I now have a new challenge for myself which I know is going to make me want to go out and shoot.

Always good to find reasons to renew the enthusiasm for a thing you love! I look forward to seeing the fruits of your challenge.

LOVE this in black and white!!! You know, I'm so reluctant to use b/w with my animal photography but seeing how great this turned out is making me think twice....

You should!! I don't always (as you know) but sometimes when there are some brilliant contrasts in the photo I just feel compelled.

Very much. In my early newspaper years, all I shot was black and white. I love it.

I need to remember to do it more because I love how it comes out. Thank you!
