Description The pomegranate is a fruit that has been cultivated for millennia but is probably best known in Greek mythology as the fruit that Persephone ate while Hades' prisoner. The myth states that Hades kidnapped Persephone and when her mother Demeter allowed the land to die from her grief, Zeus commanded Hades to return her daughter. But the rule of the Underworld is that if anyone consumes food or drink, they are doomed to remain there forever.

Since Hades had tricked Persephone into eating six pomegranate seeds, she was required to return to the Underworld six months out of the year. While Persephone is in the Underworld, her mother grieves and causes the land to wither, when she returns, spring arrives and the land flourishes once again.
