Description A few Adeptus Sororitas, the Sisters of Battle deep striking into enemy territory with their drop pods in aid of the Imperial Guards armoured devisions.

Something a little different than endless nudes and comedy renders. This one has taken about 10-11 hours over two days. All of the armour is textured by myself as the item comes with none. Gold is a pain!

Bonus points for anyone else who used to play Warhammer 40K as a kid!

Well I know nothing about Warhammer, hangs her head in shame but.... I do like this shot. Those are some seriously bad ass gals. And the texturing is awesome. Love the ruins, they really add to the whole ambiance. As usual, lighting and skin textures... to die for.

Hahahaha, yeah, Warhammer is kind of like D&D with miniatures that you paint and game with. I used to play it in my younger days and stumbled upon a load of freebie items for some of the characters for the universe such as the Sisters of Battle. They were screaming for an epic render and it was about ime I did something other than boobs!

LOL boobs are nice I say... for instance my LSS's render, she's nothing but braids and boobs, mostly covered by the braids.... thinking I might call her... The Braidy Bunch or... Knotty Girl.

Hahahaha. Knotty girl! I think someone has been spending to much time listening too SimonJM's awesomely terrible puns!

Being a guy it's a given that I like to render boobs, even if the ones are a lot smaller than what most people tend to produce, but even I need a change now and then...just not very often, hahaha...and the fact I never have any inspiration to render more complex scenes like this one. Saying that though, here is a sneek peak of some boobs and abit more of an interesting scene. Got the girls nearly all set up shader and mat wise, just need to pose them in a kick ass fight set up now. [link]

LOL I'm afraid I've always had it in me... sighs bad puns bad bad puns. But.. that shot... yeah.. love it... kick ass fight set up huh. So whatcha gonna title it?

toadz In reply to TLCDigitalArt [2012-02-03 19:57:11 +0000 UTC]

Well first off I need to get the girls all posed up into a mid air battle set up which is going to mean posing totaly from scratch which I don't mind, it's just time consuming. As for a name....hmm...Hot Naked Tasha and Poppy Killing Each Other With Knives and Swords. How is that for catchy?!

I secretly love bad puns Talking to Simon is like talking to myself, hahaha

LOL I adore bad puns, I used to have a character I'd created, sort of animated, I called her nutmeg and all her renders were done around the spice theme and all really bad puns God you start your poses from scratch? Gulps. And that name, no so gotta be a bit more creative than that.

Punnage is awesome!

For the Adeptus image and the Tasha and Poppy one I linked you too, I've had to work from scratch really due to the scenes and the nature of the poses I wanted. For a general nudey or pin up then yeah, I'll be lazy and simply use a pre-made pose and then tweak the hands etc to fit my girls (they are usualy pretty skinny so if its a hands on hips pose then I will need to make sure the hands are actualy touching the hips).

For me, the best in the business when it comes to pose packs is Ironman13 [link] Her stuff is simply amazing. Always very elegant, always very natural looking and perfectly weighted. Her sets like the V4 Pin Up Master and Pin Up Pro are worth their weight in gold because not only is there a huge selection of poses in there, it's the partial poses for things like arms, legs, torso's etc that make the sets so versatile and give a huge amount of variation and customising. Partial poses can also be a good way to get a rough look to a more unique pose that you then tweak to your needs.

I think the only other person that I know of that can pose as well as her is Thyranqs wife General Princess Ste Dawg(dont ask!) AKA Stekie. Myself and Thyranq keep bugging her to release some poses either as freebies or for sale, but she is a little shy and dosen't see how good she is at posing, right from day 1 as well!

I thought that was a killer name for my render!

Yeah I've had probs with poses not fitting well but do recall, rank beginner here and posing on my own is scary as hell. I took a lot of flack for that bow and arrow shot I posted as the bow and arrow were over-sized and her grip sucked but... first off, I really didn't know how over-sized the tools were not being an archer and god, trying to refit her grip for me was sheer torture but.. I did redo the shot and rework the grip. I do believe that I have all of Ironman13's poses. LOL I found them... no laughing.. sexy And that name so sucked big time... pffttt.

The problem with premade pose sets is that they are created with a blank V4 etc as a base. They are never going to work 100% once you apply some morphs to your character and there is no way around it other than to fix them yourself. No pose can be made to fit every character perfectly when it comes to things like hands on hips, touching faces or things like that.

Which bow and arrow image are you on about? I just had a quick look in your gallery and couldn't seem to find one with a bow. Hands are always a totaly nightmare, without doubt. I'd actualy rather draw hands than I would try and pose them. At least with drawing their is a certain technique and formula you can use to get them looking right. Posing them is a totaly differnt ball game. I am almost ashmed to admit this, but I actualy only realised the other day that if you click you characters hand, there are morphs for grips. I've spent the last year struggling with even the most basic grips problems and had a semi one click solution there all the time I felt like a real retard when I realised what I had been missing out on for all that time.

One of the gifts I got from Ironman13 was the M4 Pin Up Master so now I can do some more nude self renders for Fawnikins in her search for more moobage!

OK, so the name was pretty sucky and I actualy have no idea what I am going to call it once it's done. Any suggestions?

This was the shot. Thanks to Wolfie I changed the background too which I'm almost sorry about now. It's nice to listen to advice but the background was an integral part of that shot. [link]

LOL ok explain more about the morphs grips?

Hmmm names.. not punny ones? It looks like a battle between good and evil, black and white... perhaps something along those lines?

toadz In reply to TLCDigitalArt [2012-02-03 23:08:13 +0000 UTC]

If you feel changing the background was the wrong thing to do, then maybe it was. It's good to listen to addvice and feedback on your work, but you should never feel forced to make changes to it simply to fit with someone else's style or tastes. The fact that you said 'the background was an integral part of that shot' makes me really think you have maybe compromised your own vision a little there which is one thing we should always keep hold of to stay true to our own style and ideas. Crit and feedback are usefull but they should never be about changing someones style, it's about guidance, strengths and weaknesses, not imposing your own views and tastes into someone elses work. Sometimes you just have to stick with your gut feelings if a little experimenting hasn't worked out how you'd hoped.

As for people going on about the arrow, I don't quite see it myself. I know that guy said he was an archer, but I don't really think the arrows used in modern day sports archery are going to be very similair for an Elven fantasy archer who is out to slay some Orks with her sick bow skills! To me, I'd say the problem of the look of the scale is more that the bow is on a funny angle and dosen't really serve as a great comparison point for the arrow it's self and how the two will come together. It's not really anything that detracts from the picture either because there are often times when we see things like that with our eyes in real life and it only looks strange until our brain has processed what it's seeing and then makes sense of the angles and dimensions.

Scratch it all down to learning and then have another go at the image from scratch in two months time. I've done that a few times with the Now and Then inspirational challenge at DCC and it's great way to track your progress and tackle scenes you might not have been with the results of.

Hmm that's a wonderful idea. Now and then shots. So many of mine I'd like to redo now that I've learned just a few things. But your right, I did compromise and feel that it changed the shot too much. I should have re sized the bow and the grip a bit and left the rest be.. because what I did greatly changed the feel of the shot. Thank you

Most excellent background, atmoshere and positioning of the props. Looks like Jack's Warhammer craft in the back left. Love the women in the bkg, love seeing more detal as you look at an image. Well done there dude.

Great retexturing, showing your PS skills off nicely...swine.

Sorry for this next bit: Everything is good but I can't help thinking there is something not quite right but I can't put my finger on it. It could be down to dark textures and really dark shadows, increasing the key light might give more contrast. It could be down to the positioning of the figures.

If something hits me, apart form a toad foot/hand, I will post it.

Thanks dude! And yup, Jacks Chimera tank and Space Marine Drop Pod. They kick ass! Can't wait to see the Dreadnaught he is working on

As for the bit you cant put your finger on, I think you may be talking about some extra work I did in Photoshop to add more grunge and colour overlays to mix things up a little. Normaly I go for as much realism as my skills will allow, but as this is Warhammer 40K, I thought I'd allow myself to get a little more stylised in the overall look of the piece to try and bring over that idea of the gothic/sci-fi/used feel the 40K universe has. You can see the original render here to see what I mean [link] I tried to mimic the things they do when they shoot battle scenes for films, and even on shows like Top Gear where they use a film on the end of camera with a dark gradient at the top to make it look a little more 'brooding' and stylised, but with my own take on that of using blue and orange instead of grey.

I think one of the most fun things to do on this was actually getting the Sisters all posed up and ready for battle. I didn't think I would be able to pull of the pose of the Sister Superior, but she turned out quite nicely in the end!

FOR THE EMPEROR!

Arrr cool In that case I would have made the shadows in the render a lot lighter. I do this myself if I intend on heavy postwork or make the image a little darker if using MoodMaster as a fog layer tends to brighten up the whole image in Photoshop.

I have never seen or played Warhammer so the rest went straight over my head. LOL Yes I am a sorry gameless soul but I cope.

Thanks dude. I liked the idea of adding extra splashes of colour and a litle more dirt in PS with a few overlays. Normaly I would never do something like that in my attempts at 'realism', but I thought as it was Warhammer I would free myself up to be a little more stylistic. Thanks for the comment dude

upon reflection...does your mid twenties count as a young adult? If memory serves me Warhammer 40K came out about '85 or so...that would make me 29...late twenties then...memory is a fleeting thing isn't it?

toadz In reply to blackjamie [2012-02-02 17:21:13 +0000 UTC]

If my memory serves right, I think they launched their first gaming system around 85, and then introduced the 40K universe around 87 with Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader as the 1st edition of the 40K rules.

I vaguely remember my older brothers playing the first edition, but didn't get started until the second edition myself. I beleive now they are on their fourth edition, and I think I still have my old school Space Marine and Eldar armies in my attic. Maybe I should turn up at a Games Workshop store and have my ass handed to me by an overly energetic 13 year old kid playing as an Ork army.
