Description Further thoughts. This is a really random selection of stuff cause it's just what I like. If you think there's something I should add, TOTALLY tell me about it. That is the whole point of this thing- just sharing tricks!
I should be writing an essay right now.

p.s. sorry about the quality of art in this one. ummm...that's not the point?

YAAAAAAY Spacing IS awesome!!!!! And Scatter is just as much fun as flicking a page with paint!!! >3 Thank you!

You know I've never really tried to use the color dynamics, but after looking at this I might try it out and see how I do! Have you ever used any version of Corel Painter? I was just wondering because since you obviously nerd out about the subtleties of PS brushes, if you've ever played with Painter you know how incredibly different it can be. In any event, this is another fun, useful tutorial.

You know, the last time I had the opportunity to try painter it was on my old dinosaur of a Dell which would just have a complete seizure when I tried to use it, so I gave it up as a lost cause. I'd really like to try again, though....hmmmmm

Thanks for taking the time to really go through my work, it makes me so happy!

Yeah it's got it's quirks but I've grown to love it. It's funny, seems like a lot of people our age have stories about working on ancient Dell computers, I know I have.
I've been really enjoying looking through it, you've got really sophisticated use of color. It's given me a lot of of ideas just looking at it!

Oh a question!
is there a way to save or make a brush set?
i know you can load brushes, but can you make a
set so you can load them at will, instead of switching
between the available sets (basic brushes/wet media brushes .. )

toerning In reply to Kooosh [2011-09-13 17:01:31 +0000 UTC]

Yes, if you want to create custom brush tips, check out this tutorial, [link] which is simple and to the point.

If you simply want to save the settings you have put onto an existing brush tip, go up to the top right where there is a brush icon and click the down toggle and then click the "new tool preset." I like storing them there because it allows me to name them instead of having to recognize them by a tiny icon in a billion other tiny icons. Make sure to un-check the "save with color" box though when you save it!

I'm going to be completely honest, I've been using Photoshop all year in my Digital Design class (I have been using Gimp for years, no, I'm not a noob. C:.), and I can honestly tell you that the main qualm I always have with Shop is that I could not angle the brush or reduce/increase pressure as I could on canvas. Now that I know otherwise, I am so much happier.
In summary, this really helped! Thank you, and I love you art. I would go through and favourite all I like, but I think it would be obnoxious to you to find a gazillion and three favs on your page. So I'm just /watching you, if that's okay. C:

This is amazing! Great insight on the brushes. It never occurred to me to use the Scatter option that way, but I can see what you mean about giving you ideas! And the use of the color jitter is very clever as well. NOW I finally know what all those "useless options" were for!

Thanks very much <3

I'll definitely be playing around much more in PS with brush settings thanks to this.

Wow! You're completely right. I don't think I've ever even given the other settings a second thought, but after reading this I definitely will play around with it. I hate trying to do randomization, so the scatter trick will definitely help. This is fantastic! I'm so glad you shared this with us! I'm eternally grateful!

i never experiment with my brushes and end up hand drawing all the textures, and spacings, and making things super fucking hard on myself because i've always been scared of the brush settings. xD;

Hey, how do I make it NOT space? I keep getting my lines all choppy and its very upsetting!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

toerning In reply to BattlemasterRose [2009-09-16 18:49:22 +0000 UTC]

there's a little slider, just like for brush size or something, under "spacing." If you slide it all the way down to the left, the spaces between brush marks completely disappear! The downside is that this can make your stroke a LOT slower, especially if you're running a PC, so I tend to do it so I JUST can't see them, instead of all the way down. that make sense?
good luck!

CatsinSummer [2009-06-16 19:38:19 +0000 UTC]

Now see, all that color dynamics thing reminds me of is the time I had it set on jitter and thought something was seriously wrong with my PS. My colors were all messed up, and I couldn't figure out for the life of me I had to blend everything together to get a cohesive color.
