Description Another vaguely-meta Playboy-esque cartoon. The idea is they're at the opera, and the guy's like "Yes yes, the performance is quite good, but the story! A woman, marrying simply for money? Preposterous!" and the old guy's just chewing his gums going "quite right, quite right"

hahaha anyway, the point is, I couldn't get the wording right and fit the punchline in the end of the sentence. If you have a suggestion please comment, and if there's a really good one I'll put it under the cartoon where it's supposed to go!

I've been trying to get more local color into my illustrations, it's a real struggle for me. Photoshop.

JEEZ! I usually try to stay away from talking stats, but seriously over 750 faves in 8 hours? I love you guys. Your comments make me smile, and your support keeps me making!

Wow, now this is just really cool. There's something about the expressions of all the characters and then the lighting that captures a certain mood. Funny joke behind it, too, with the knowing looks of the ladies!

Funny, and oh so true! I love your colors and the sly look on the brunette. Don't take this the wrong way, but the two men remind me of the old guys on The Muppet Show who would always sit in the balcony and insult the cast! XD

The Peanut Gallery guys were my ABSOLUTE FAVORITES and I realized after I had painted this that I had totally subconsciously drawn EXACTLY THEM! I had seen the movie a few nights previous haha thanks so much for noticing!

The guy on the right reminds me a little of Edgar from "Aristocats" - perhaps a chubby rich alternate version of him who got all the money after all!

Fabulous as always, especially the use of light and shadow (again!).

Though I'm wondering a bit, is the brunette supposed to touch one of her breasts? Or is it just the angle that makes it look a little like that? I'm honestly not one who looks for every chance to see something naughty in a picture.

Love the picture and with the background story that you provided, it's even better ^^

My suggestion:
"Opera these days are so unrealistic. Everyone knows women marry for romance, not for money, am I right?"

CORRECTION!!!!!! My most humble sincere apology with regards to the "Sir" in my comment! It was my mistake by adding that as you are not a sir but in fact a "Madame" and a very very talented one at that. Again I am sorry for my stupidity. Please forgive my ignorance.

hahahahahaha IT'S OKAY! It seems like a lot of people on this site think I'm a dude, and honestly I rather like the idea that my work says something so separate from an inescapable truth about my physical person. (not that I want to escape being a lady, I love it, i just find it interesting!)

seriously, no worries.

well, isn't that all we women want from a man? The money? XD jokes, jokes. But a magnificent picture nonetheless! I just love the texts, colours and the looks on everyone's face, particularly the one saying "Preposterous!"

And to me, the woman in the green dress seems to have heard what he said and is giving off this 'aura' of 'Hpmh, but of course!'

How about

Younger guy: Yes, yes, the performance is jolly good, but the story! A woman marrying simply for money? Preposterous!

Older guy: Indeed. How much did you bribe your wife?

Younger guy: $500,000. You?

Older guy: $1 million. The older I get, the more expensive they become.

toerning In reply to gii-chan [2012-01-10 17:02:35 +0000 UTC]

Actually I don't use any "textures" other than the ones in the brush. For this piece I used exclusively one brush: [link] it's "73" in the left column, 4th from the bottom.

Thanks so much!

The subject is great! I would love to see like 10 more of these 60's era playboy cartoons. I think u should pursue a career in this. If u need ideas, look to the time line. were always doing stupid things that people never would have thought would happen in the 60's. I mean talk about how smoking was thought to be beneficial to your health in the 60's or how lsd and free love was supposed to stop all war ever. if u need a human example for sexual misbehavior I suggest paris hilton or the kardashians. (even a high hippy couldn't have hallucinated that group)

u know ud think that ....but vouge often runs classic comics like that (that one about the corsets would be perfect for vouge). so do other fashion mags and some of the dirtyer playboy style ones could be picked up by maxim or possibly an internet site. you never know til u try. But even if u dont wana submit them, atleast we on DA can still enjoy them.

I went to see La Traviata last year, and all I could think through the performance was " If these damn hysterics just stopped for a moment and had a conversation: all this would resolve easily!"
I think I felt a little like your man in the back. People gave me looks.

The expressions are priceless. I'm in love with the rough strokes, especially with the gentlemen. The rough details on the rail look very pleasing to the eye, and the colour combinations are on the spot. The gentlemen are probably a bit too desaturated to my taste, but then again they do get overshadowed by their charming, voluptuous wives.

"Good lord, Edmund, the music is one thing, but the story?! Simply tasteless! A women ensnaring a man as merely for his gold? Such a hussy couldn't exist in real life --"
"Darling-heart, I need more champagne."
"Oh, yes, of course Celeste, whatever you need."
"And a new necklace would be lovely."
"Certainly, sweetheart."

It's a bit more then a snappy one liner, but I swear it was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this
