Description Pyrotherium is a large plant-eating mammal part of the Gomphothere family, which are closely related to modern day elephants. There are two different weight specimens. Pyrotherium Romeroi weighed 3.85 tons, and Pyrotherium Macfaddeni weighed under 1 ton. Pyrotherium lived in South America which is now Argentina during the early Oligocene epoch. It's features are a short trunk combined with a long lower jaw, with two tusks on the lower jaw, and an astonishing four tusks at the upper jaw, which males most likely used for defence and fighting. But most of the time, they were used to scrap bark off of trees, and the trunk was used for foraging.

I had a really weird obsession with the early evolution's of the elephant when I was a kid. This picture-and the other you uploaded-are bringing back my inner weirdo. These are absolutely wonderful!
