His steps echoed in the depths of the cavern sacred to his kind. It was not as huge as the main caverns of the Undergound Kingdom of Nocturia, but no other place was more important to him and any subject under their mountains. His heart was beating faster with each step he made and his thoughts were nothing more than a chaotic storm of questions which remained unanswered to him.

Since the distant days of the hard educations, which has been bestowed on him, everybody prepared the youngling for the greatest test of his life: Kingship. Back then it was nothing more than an absurd image of older individuals. Something so obscure it could not possibly be true. After all his father was hailed as one of the greatest kings Nocturia ever had. Besides that he was the youngest son and only second to the throne. Fate plays in mysterious ways. During a terrible accident king Eridanus fell into a very long coma and was unable to rule. His older brother Aurelius ruled on their father's behalf, but after an illness he left this word with a relaxed sigh.

Here he was now... the new king under the mountain, following a path any king had to walk on the day of the coronation. The lights of the local crystal formations were the only companions in this seemingly looking cavern. Until a much brighter light source appeared at the end of the path. Knowing that there was no way back the king reached his destination and looked down into an abyss.

There he gazed upon something so ancient one could say it was as old as the world itself. Found by the very first Batwings Corvus laid his eyes on a Well his kind simply called "Monah" which ment "Mother" in their language. For a simple reason. This Well was the main water source of the earth. Every river, every lake, every ocean... no matter if big or small - it was the offspring of this well. Since the discovery of this place his ancestors swore to protect it. Thus the very first Alicorn emerged from the society of the Batwings.

Since that day his line was ruling over the Underground and now his time has come to take up this burden for the sake of the kingdom and the world. Yet he did not feel ready nor worthy to be called king. In that moment a magical pulse went through the caver and welcomed the new king with a pleasant warmth.

"Father, brother... my honored ancestors... have you felt the same way as I do?" He thought loudly and pulled the sword which was in his family for generations. With a firm grip on its handle Corvus kneeled. "Father used to tell me that you made us who we are. If it is true I do not know... but... I am scared. I shudder at the thought what could happen if I will fail. This burden is mine now. I have to endure it... alone.

Another pulse came out of the well and it felt even warmer. Like the well itself tried to cheer him up, telling him that he was not alone. Then he remembered the words Aurelius said to him before he passed away.

< Our line has always ruled with strength and wisdom. My time has come to an end... you shall be king. I feel terrible by leaving you alone with this tremendous duty little brother. Should you ever feel alone look at everything around you - at the legacy of our family. The kings of the past will always be at your side and will guide you... so will I. >

A sigh echoed though the cave and with great confidence the king roase up. "I am the King under the Mountain. I shall not fight for glory or wealth but for home and family. I shall serve Nocturia and the Well and give my life for them as did those before me. This I vow by my blood and honor. May the mountain itself be my strength and the water my wisdom."
