how do you get such those great pics without flashing? special tricks?

no special tricks - I've measured exposition for a light part of picture (bright wall) using automatic program, switched to manual mode and set almost same parameters (changed aperture from 8.0 to 10 and shutter speed to 1/20 from 1/40). so I got underxposition of shaded parts.
