Description Locomotive #710 is a EMD GP9 that was originally built as a GP7 in September of 1950 for the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railroad. Upon the merging of the NC&StL with the Louisville and Nashville in 1957, the 710 became a member of their active roster and was renumbered as the 1710 then later the 478. In 1978 it was acquired by Amtrak who assigned it to pulling work trains across their electrified routes in the Northeast such as the Northeast Corridor and the Keystone Corridor. Under Amtrak the 478 was renumbered yet again to the 772 and was upgraded internally to GP9 Specifications. So as to denote it from the company’s regular Passenger Power, the 772 was also given a simple Orange Paint Job with Black Amtrak Lettering. Come 1999 however as the company began taking delivery of more modern Locomotives for their Maintenance of Way Operations, the 772 was sidelined and subsequently sold off to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum who had it restored cosmetically to her as built NC&StL Since arriving on the property in 2000, the 710 has acted as primary motive power for the Museum’s Excursion Trains.
