Description Illustration for "The Killer Without Blood-Stained Hands", which will appear in Champagne Shivers '08.

As I've mentioned before, I wanted to be a comic book artist for years. It wasn't until I saw the work of Bernie Wrightson in the Creepshow Comic, and his illustrations in the Stephen King's The Stand and Cycle of the Werewolf, that I was inspired to try my hand at illustrating. To date, Wrightson's work in Frankenstein is the most inspiring inkwork I've ever seen. This work was a heavy influence on my trying to create a hyper detailed style myself.

In this piece, I decided not to use stippling or references for the face; in fact, there's no stippling at all. Although I like the way that the more realistic, stippled pieces look, I've always preferred less realistic inkwork featuring crosshatching (like the works of Wrightson and even Chadbourne).

I'm fairly pleased with how it came out, and I really found it much more fun and satisfying than my previous submission which relied on references and the almighty stipple.

If you've read this boring rant, you have my respect...I probably wouldn't have. LOL

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this was *headcheese* but apart from deli meats, I love the technique.

I read your rant, and I agree. I lose patience with stippling at times and that's when I go for the textures using crosshatching, scribbling, and scumbling. I've killed a lot of pens that way.

Tomoran In reply to squidink [2007-07-18 19:46:06 +0000 UTC]

LOL! Good ol' headcheese! LOL.

Yeah, stippling can be VERY boring. I think the best pictures should have a mix of techniques; that's why I've always loved your work. You bring all those techniques together, and the outcome is just fantastic!

Thanks again!

This is incredible. I love the comical side of this. Has a slight look of something you'd find in 'City of the Dead' and 'Shaun of the Dead'. So much detail and shading makes it very 3D in appearance. Excellent work I must say.

..."Yeah, it's right in front of the dude's severed head."

This is fantabulous work man. I noticed something different about the art immediately upon seeing it. NO STIPPLING!! I couldn't put my finger on it...until you mentioned it of course. Even the ketchup is sharp looking. Terrific piece.

Tomoran In reply to DickStarr [2007-07-12 18:13:23 +0000 UTC]

LOL. Thanks so much, bud. Yup, I'm leaving the stippling alone for a little while. I've always preferred hatching myself, so I figured that I'd go back and play with the lines for a while.

So glad you dig it, bud.
