Are you kidding? He is, by far, one of my favorite artists! As a kid, I used to reread the "Scary Stories" books over and over again, mainly because of his creepy, dripping, surreal illustrations. I even bought copies for my oldest son and I still read them. He was a huge influence when I began illustrating.

Oh God, dude--the "Oh Susannah" one is my fav! It's funny, after I responded to your comment, I dragged out those books and read them all again! I actually tried to contact Gammel just to say how much I loved his work in those books, and how much he inspired me as an illustrator, but I could find a contact. Oh well.

I don't think that he did, at least not an official one. I found an article about him online (it had a bio as well). I wanted to buy prints of some of the SCARY STORIES art.

When I looked up his work, the Scary Stories stuff seemed to represent a very small portion of it. I will say, however, that all the bios I found mentioned his work in the Scary Stories series as his most well known. I don't think that you and I were the only ones he made an impression on.

I heard he won a Caldecott Medal for one of his works, I'm sure which. It was not for the Scary Stories books, though, that's ironic, because it seems like that's mostly what he is remembered for
