…Actually Feanor and his Silmarils. The title comes from the fact that the Old English poem "Vainglory" suddenly came to my mind for some reason and I thought that might fit, even though it has nothing to do with the Silmarillion.Anyway – I wanted to paint Feanor and his shiney crystal creations for years and I still don’t feel like having done them justice (and that’s not because this picture is wee and tiny), but at least it’s a start. It was fun to colour, though.
Watercolours with bits of white acrylics, as usual.

Finally somebody drew Feanor so that I can let him replace the one in my imagination. He's awesome - so smug and "bastardy" here. Just like the next High king of the Noldors should be. Loving it!

About the watercolours work I cannot say a word for it has always been some kind of black magic for me...

I didn’t need to do any pacts with the devil – at least none that I am aware of 
To me, one of the interesting bits about illustrating literature is comparing it to what other people did afterwards. And even though I love other people’s versions, I try not to lose my own ones. Even though I like to uhm let’s say adjust them sometimes

Ok totally a ton of German so I don't know if I'll be repeating anything others have said XD. I do agree that it's neat to see them drawn as long crystals instead of gems, I always imagined them round too. I love all the red, really captures that firey spirit stuffs. Also, you seem to have the same issue I have with people...I tend to draw them with thin bodies XD I'm working on it I swear....Overall, this is really neat xD.

Oh I don’t mind if you repeat something, I doubt that you will have exactly the same opinion, anyway.
As for anatomy, I totally agree, I made his body way too small in this picture, which bugs me, but I realized it too late and did not bother to do the lineart all over again.
On the other hand, I’m happy with the colours, so I’m glad if other people affirm that they turned out fine

Ich schließe mich Jenny an. Toll, wie Du den Glanz der Silmaril hingekriegt hast! Ich bin ja ein großer Fan von allem, was mit Licht und Schatten zu tun hat und würde es mit den Aquarellfarben auch mal so toll hinkriegen. Aber ich geb nicht auf: Übung macht schließlich den Meister

Ich hab’ auch lange gebraucht, bis ich dabei angekommen bin, weiß oder fast weiß und ganz dunkle Schatten in einem Bild zu verbinden. Im Moment sitze ich an einem "normal" kontrastreichen und das kommt mir jetzt fast grau vor
…ich sollte nur noch ganz kontrastreiche Bilder machen, die gefallen mir am Ende immer am besten

I think it might have something to do with the thin, not always self-evident line between fascination for and love of something in itself benign and the very destructive obsession and pride. And madmen and haughty princes are easy to have a thing for at a safe distance

And I agree! THe light reflections are really nice, and then of course also the shadows. I like the high contrast on his lower half, where the light doesn't reach - I wish I could pull off those sharp shadows as well.
As usual I really admire your colour skills and your overall painting and and and everything - not to mention the weight and volume of that hair O_O Maybe it's just maybelline but I like it!

I just love doing hair. And high contrast is fun to do as well. Just be bold enough to do really dark shadows once your first layer of colour is perfectly dry

Interesting Silmaril design - to do them as longish crystals. I've always imagined them round.
You did a good job of capturing the radiance in watercolour, and the reflection of light upon him! That's beastly difficult to do in watercolour. I know. I've failed multiple times.

…Ich hab’ einfach beschlossen, nicht logisch über die Lichtsituation nachzudenken.
"Ok, lass mal 'ne undefinierbare Lichtquelle nach links oben setzen, und die Silmarilli leuchten halt. Passt!"
Und die weiße Acrylfarbe war gerade mal weiß genug für die endlose Shineyness (Wortneuschöpfung) der Juwelen
Steht im Buch irgendwas über die Form der Silmarilli? (da, ich hab’ mir den Plural gemerkt) Ich hatte tatsächlich immer längliche im Kopf, aber ich kann dir beim besten Willen nicht sagen, warum. Vielleicht finde ich längliche einfach viel praktischer als runde… (sie können nicht wegrollen!)

Mir war gar nicht klar, dass das Wort eine bestimmte Form beinhaltet ^^. Ich dachte immer, das könnten in irgendeine Form gebrachte Edelsteine sein, Hauptsache geschliffen. Und in der deutschen Übersetzung, die ich ja zuerst gelesen hatte, steht glaube ich nur Juwelen, hab’ gerade keine zum Nachsehen zur Hand…

Nee, ich find die total erfrischend.
Das einzige, was mich davon abhält, das Design zu klauen, ist das Wissen, dass Silmaril-Diebstahl schon zu ziemlichen Katastrophen geführt hat... außerdem hab ich grad keine Zwei-Zentner-Spinne da, die mir dabei behilflich sein könnte.
