Description Túrin and Beleg. I should do more Tolkien art. It's a start.

The third and last piece I wanted to colour during Jenny's workshop but didn't manage to start. On the other hand, looking at her Tolkien art, I felt so… small next to her anyway.
The contrast turned out less strong than in the last two paintings but I'm quite happy with it, nevertheless. The shadows on the ground freaked me out, though, so I decided simply to ignore them. Now I know what I should ask for during the next workshop…
And I certainly abused the "Alan Lee trick"!

(Green) watercolour not because I intended to annoy Jenny but because green is always my colour of choice for Tolkien art since I bought Summoning's wonderful "Oathbound" album some years ago.

And characters belong to the unfortunately dead professor Tolkien and so on…

Has nothing to with it, sorry (as much as I love Discworld ), it's an illustration to Tolkien’s Silmarillion/The Children of Húrin.

Seemingly. But both were dead in the end, while Nobby Nobbs is still alife...
We might discuss now, who's more intelligent, but I think, whoever gets himself killed, isn't.

Wow, that’s a wonderful idea to combine a poem which some illustrations! I really like your take on Túrin’s story (should we call it legend?).
Thanks for allowing me to be "part" of that .

Yes, you should definitely do more Tolkien art. Because this looks just fantastic. Detailed, interesting and beautifully designed, with grit and beauty right where they belong. Thanks for sharing!

I know. There can never be enough Tolkien art . We’ll see when I'll do the night one that I like enough to finish. It’s not like the Silmarillion wasn’t providing eufficient inspiration .

... or the News from Middle-Earth, or that 12-volumed row of bricks containing what is probably a ton of Tolkien's notes...

I didn’t get much of the History of Middle-Earth, honestly speaking . The first three volumes were really entertaining and worthwhile, but the rest of it…
"Alright, so that’s why everyone knows that Maedhros is redhaired. Okay. Good to know. Next page. …Alright, what was written on the previous one? I forgot already…"

Hisietari In reply to Toradh [2012-03-17 14:18:59 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, indeed! I forgot how many (or which ones) I had already read, and put off reading the rest. For now at least. It's just good to have them around though, and they look mightily impressive onna shelf.

Come to speak of it, too bad I didn't have them during my really, really bad times of insomnia... oh well.

Toradh In reply to Hisietari [2012-03-17 15:00:56 +0000 UTC]

I even put them behind glass – to save the volumes from my cats . …And dust. Not that I’d fear for dust settling on the Silmarillion, but the later HoME volumes are significantly harder to pick up again .

Hahaha, yeah, I have guinea pigs, so everything precious needs to be out of their reach. It's a bit like having little kids, so I can turn a deaf ear when people poke about my family plans. I'm on a forced break at the moment, but the one and only thing I enjoy a little is that I read more. I missed that during my times of (of course unpaid) over-working. HoME - Wow! Home! - has looked more friendly at me lately, after I finished a pretty long thingy about Icelandic law systems in 10th century.

I always read during train rides and at breakfast . Works pretty well.

Sorry to hear about your break! I hope it’s for the better, at least. Enjoy your freedom to read good books .

You know, the more I prowl your gallery, the more imporessed I am with your colouring. And now I don't just mean the fact that you know watercolours in a way I can only dream of, but the way you handle your colour schemes. Everything just -fits-.

... and I really like that helmet That's badass.

Toradh In reply to Verdokai [2011-11-14 20:44:01 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!

I suppose it really shows that this piece was done straight after coming back from [link] s watercolour workshop. Colour schemes were one of the topics we covered. It helped a lot ^^.

…I wasn't sure about the helmet but everyone seems to like it . I didn't want to simply copy Alan Lee's version. Which is sometimes really hard because I love his illustrations.

As in the heads are too big for the bodies. Usually bodies are seven to eight heads tall - yours seem way shorter

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Toradh In reply to NordicLynx [2011-10-16 07:36:29 +0000 UTC]

Leave a thin "line" very light or even white between two areas of colour. It's easier to show than explain – examples in this picture would be Túrin's boots or the rocks, I left very thin light lines between single rocks.

But you know, I think that one learn very much by imitateing. But you tried to do something own, I understand.

True! Don't get me wrong, learning from others is a good thing and will even help you to find your own style. But stealing is something else, and I wouldn't want to do it, but sometimes it's tempting .

Celerana-chan In reply to Toradh [2011-10-16 16:18:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Unfortunately sometimes it's hard to know is it stealing or have you edited enough to call it your own. I wish I knew where the limit goes
