Canto IV. Dante e Virgilio raggiungono il luogo dove scontano l'eternità coloro che vissero prima di Cristo. Vi risiedono quelli che non furono battezzati e che non hanno commesso colpe gravi, perché per loro c'è l'inferno vero e proprio (non ce ne frega niente se non sai chi è Gesù! Sei stato cattivo, Dio ti sgama e ti punisce. Toh). Da notare che fra i non cristiani presenti nel limbo c'è anche Saladino: uomo di grande virtù e morale, che nel medioevo ci si emozionavano e dicevano che in realtà era un cristiano “in pectore”. Si accenna all'atomista Democrito, che diceva che il mondo si era formato grazie a un turbine che accozzò elementi in modo causale. Si vedono i primi personaggi mitologici, che Dante riusa come veri, per farne modelli di virtù o vizi in chiave cristiana.

Chapter IV. Dante and Vergil approach the place where people who lived before Christ are spending the eternity. The ones who can stay there are people who didn't receive the baptism and didn't commit any bad crime: non-baptized sinners are punished in Hell (we do not care if you didn't know who Christ is! You were bad, God saw you! Go and be punished for the rest of eternity!). Notice that between non-christians in the Limbo we also find Saladin: a man of great virtue and morality; in the middle ages they loved to think that he was a christian “in pectore” (deep in his heart). There is also a mention to the philosopher Democritus, who said that the world was created by sort of a tornado that mixed together the atoms, in a casual way. We see the first mythological characters, which Dante uses as really existed people, to make them examples of christian virtues or sins.
