Arguably the archetypal "raptor", Deinonychus lived in Montana, Wyoming and Oklahoma, USA during the Early Cretaceous. It could grow as large as 3.4 metres long.
The discovery of Deinonychus in the 1960s revolutionized how the scientific community viewed dinosaurs. In addition to being very birdlike, skeletons and teeth of Deinonychus were found among the remains of a large ornithopod called Tenontosaurus, so it's been suggested that they were pack hunters that worked as a team to bring down prey far larger than themselves, although this is of course unconfirmed. Whatever the case, they had relatively large brains by dinosaur standards.

The dromaeosaurs featured in the Jurassic Park series (as well as the ones in the TV shows Primeval and Doctor Who, for example) are based on Deinonychus, although they are referred to as either "Velociraptors", or simply "raptors".

I mostly based this animal's appearance on vultures, falcons, and magpies. Like magpies (or even Deinonychus's smaller relative, Microraptor), I gave them bluish, iridescent feathers. The implication is that they use their tail feathers to signal to one another when hunting, allowing the pack to silently stalk prey while still being able to communicate.
