Description Thor's Hammer on the left in Bryce Canyon National Park. I've been here (Thor's Hammer) a few times at sunrise and never came away with anything I felt like posting. Finally, on this day, with a subtle layer of clouds on the horizon to soften the sun, as well as a recent snowstorm, the conditions seemed to be on my side.

It was a difficult exposure due to the sun being almost level with the top of the Hoodoo know as Thor's Hammer. I used a 3G HS filter to attempt to darkend the sky to a reasonable level. The only way to truly appreciate Bryce is to experience a sunrise there, the colors and forms are breathtaking.

Canon 5D. 17-40 L. Circ Polarizer. 3GHS filter.

Awesome picture ! It looks even better at this season !
I'm curious though... I know ND filter, but what is a GHS filter? I can't find this piece of information on internet

I can totally see like... an arm from the shoulder to the hand and the hammer, in that pile of rock. haha.
Awesome shot, really pretty.
I can see, though, the line where the filter ends, right across the tip of the hammer.
But it's still a great shot

I know exactly what you mean, I need to go in and try and re-work that section again. You can see the line across the rocks next to the sun as well. Tough exposure on this one.

Thank you!

yeah... were you already crouching down? because I would think that if you could get SOME sort of... lump of grass or rock or anything in the line of the cameras sight between you and the sun, then it wouldn't glare so much.
But that would be really hard if it is really flat, haha....

not crouching, the sun is mostly hidden behind the rock its peeking around, if I shot directly into the sun it would be much more blown out. the star effect you see on the bottom happens when the sun is partially blocked. I used the fitler in large part to even the exposure range from bright sky and the darkened foreground, the sun spot just happened to be in the area, unfortunatley so was the top of the hoodoo! I think the best way to expose this would be a blending exposure techniqe i'm not yet familiar with.

Me too!!! I know everyone mentions photos that are blended with like 3 or 4 different exposures to get REALLY awesome looking shots, but I have no idea how to do that...
I need to learn.

Thank you very much. Its well worth the trip becuase it feels like you've got the entire parks to yourself, you don't have to contend with hoards of tourists like you would during peak seasons.

Difficult shot, too contrasty, although the colors are great and no lost detail. Great use of filters.

Thank you. I boosted the contrast a lot in my processing, it may be too much. Maybe I'll go back and make some adjustments. I appreciate your feedback.
