Here is another Simpsons playset I designed for Playmates Toys a few years ago - Tree House of Horror IV: The Collector's Lair.The only piece that did not make it to production was the bookcase containing the Collector's collectibles.
The concept art was drawn by hand, scanned, Streamlined, and rendered in Illustrator. Since the source material is very 'flat' I kept the concept renderings kind of flat as well. The control drawings are a combination of Illustrator art and hand drawn art.

I saw that episode almost twenty years ago! And I neer knew they made a playset about that episode, but now that I saw it I can only say: Fantastic!

I had a blast working on those Simpsons sets. That THOH set was a particular favorite of mine since I was able to get Playmates to 'break the mold' of the standard playset layouts we had been doing and make a 2-story set. The collectors I chatted with on the Simpson Collector Sector website (www.simpsonscollectors.com ) were also big fans of this set, which helped assure me that I hit a home run with it.

These schematics are really cool to see. I sold a lot of the Simpsons figures and sets, but I couldn't part with this one; it's my favorite. Great work.

This was one of my favorites as well.
When Playmates asked me to design a set for this environment, I told them it needed to be 2 stories tall. They said "If you can fit it in the box, you can do it." From that point I did a basic playset layout, and package layout. I figured out how many pieces there would be and how big each one was before actually "designing" the set.
When I showed them it would fit (the package size is fixed) they were delighted and made the set.
The fans on the simpsonscollectors.com forum all seemed to like this set a lot as well. The added height makes the set seem so much bigger than the other sets. Plus, who can resist Comic Shop Guy as "The Collector"!
