"Acting for shut-ins" -- yeah, sounds about right. I tend to go full-body immersion, too (at least when I'm planning Β and rough-sketching a composition), which leads to some weird looks when strangers (or people in general, aside from family members who have grown used to my quirks) see me arguing with thin air in the middle of a room, only to leap back down into my seat and scribble manically... then jump back up and start arguing again.

drawing in a public place can be hard for this exact reason. it's so hard to hold back mimicking the face I want to draw, it's kinda hilarious

I like the expressions on this one. Although, I have to say, being an expression-drawer myself, I have never felt the need to make faces in front of a mirror for drawing purposes. I do, however, tend to stare intensely at a person's face while trying to figure out the specifics that would make them look authentic on paper. That action does not always go unnoticed, however, hh.

I can tell you why itΒ΄s useful to do the expression you are drawing yourself:
1. You feel your bodys movements, therefore better understanding ho to draw them
2. By making an expression, you automatically get the emotions linked with it (yes, you get happier just by smiling), and itΒ΄s easier to draw any expression when you are in that mood yourself.
