Description "He came back up with a bit of brown cloth on his pinkie finger. We all looked close at it, and noticed that it was nothing less that a tiny deerstalker..."

Jeremy Brett (1933-1995) was a marvellous and versatile actor with a distinguished forty-year career in film, television, radio, and stage. He is most internationally famed for his masterful and enriching portraiture of the world's greatest consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes. He has touched the hearts of millions, including my own. Mr. Brett is the "quintessential" Holmes! He is, and shall be, always dearly missed.

This is portrait is from my "Professionally Jeremy" Series, in which I compose an artwork of Mr. Brett about every year in dedication to him. A few years ago, I illustrated three sketches for Otaku Tess ' charmingly written story, The Case of The Cheese Snatcher, where the human residents of 221B Baker Street discover evidence that there's a mouse in the lodgings! Hmmm...who could that be, I wonder?

This is so adorable!
I love how his expression from the original photo is changed: he is smiling more here, as if in a subtle expression of delight, and it's still perfectly true to what he looks like... that is such a treat, well done.

Now for some constructive unofficial criticism: I agree with you on the hand, it looks to me like "The Mysterious Case of Jeremy Brett's Sixth Finger." But it really was very confusing in the original photo too, it kind of looks like he does have six.

Thank you for this picture, I am officially inspired to draw now.

I'm not a Premium member, so it says here I can't write a Critique - I'll just have to do with a critique without the capital letter, then

This is a magnificent portrait, with the wonderfully sweet touch of Mr. Sherringford Basil on the Great Detective's little finger. You clearly master the use of different pencils, with alternatively soft and brilliant lights and very black darks that highlight his distinctive profile - I'd really envy your talent if I didn't remember that it comes with a lot of hard work as well! Superb piece, going straight into my favourites

Awwwwwwww, I really appreciate that they you took the time to do write a critique, subscription or not. That really means a lot.

I'm really glad you like this portrait. I really wanted to do something unique with this piece, particularly since it was an illustration for a friend's story. I had the use a lot of different pencils, yes, but I think it was worth it, even though I feel his hand is deformed. (Growl.) Nevertheless, thanks again! Huggles and snuggles!

Ohhhh wowzers. That is amazing. I am envious of your shading. The shadows on his temple, and falling across his nose are PERFECT. One of the best Brett portraits I've seen. Totally dreamy.

And the tiny deerstalker is the icing on the cake. The Great Mouse Detective was my first introduction to Holmes, back when I was like, seven!

tranimation-art In reply to iamfergie [2010-03-09 08:00:27 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I'm really glad you like it. The shading was what took the longest. I just gradually go from light to dark, layer over layer, until you get this. It look about three hours to get it just right.

If you like Great Mouse Detective, please check out the rest of my gallery. It's very GMD-centric.

I've never gotten the chance to comment on this picture before, another brilliant masterpiece slipped past me! After going through another JB/SH/viewing episodes phase (that's not a bad thing in the least, by the way), I found this and loved it so much, I had to go read the story! Unfortunately, the link it goes to is dead from the dearly departed Geocities. However, I did a search on FanFiction.net and found the story! I am quite proud of myself. Here is the link if you want to update it here.

Oh, and I hope Basil got his deerstalker back, might be a tad small for Holmes to wear...

I'm glad you're getting back into the Granada series, and what a wonderful series it is! And I do believe that Basil does get the deerstalker back, leaving it next to a mouse-hole.

Brett was the best all right! His face is very distinguished and your use of light and dark is dramatic. My one concern is that his fingers look chubby. I'd give his face 4 1/2 stars out of five and his hand 3 stars. The mini-deerstalker cap is a nice touch and it's instantly recognizable.

I have a painting of Holmes based on Brett: [link]

Thank you so much for the critique; I really appreciate it. This was my one of my first art pieces of Jeremy Brett and I agree completely with the hands looking messed up. I think the later portraits I did of Jeremy look look much better.
