Description Pteranodon ingens ("winged and toothless") is from a group flying reptiles known as pterosaurs. It resembles the appearance of a giant pelican, with a 24 feet wide wingspan. It is believed that they primarily used "dynamic soaring," similar to an albatross, exploiting the vertical gradient of wind speed near the ocean surface to travel long distances without flapping and the aid of thermals; although they may have been capable of active powered flight as well, as some Pteranodon rookeries have been found hundreds of miles from shorelines.

The species is notable crests attached to the back of the skull counter-weighted its large beak. Males had larger, longer crests while females had smaller, pegged-like crests. These cranial crests may have been used for mating displays, as they served little in aerodynamic functions. They fed primarily on invertebrates, such as ammonites and squid, and vertebrates, such as basal fish, sea turtles, small plesiosaurs, and some flightless diving birds.

(Nothing like cross-hatching in a restaurant when your food arrives late and your waiter is rude!)

Medium - Uni-ball black.

wow this caught my eye, nice cross-hatching details.

Thanks, but all I see are the flaws, unfortunately. I'm my own worse critic.

It's alright, artists only see flaws but it only makes them able to improve and not sit stagnant like most make the mistake of doing.

i am pretty sure only pteranodon males had crests, since the pelvis of the speciemens wich were big enough to be adults was wide (adaptation for laying eggs) while the male pelvis was narrower (not unlike humans huh? :-P) when i reffered to the crests, i only meant they didn't have an aerodynamic function, because if it really was so important, it would have to be present in juveniles and females as well, because, if it was a rudder, only the males would be able to steer, you know what i mean. furthermore, the wings had much larger area and were present in both genders and all stages of growth, so simply adjusting the wings would be enough to maneuver. on top of that, there was a trend in pterosaurs to evolve crests which had as little effect on the aerodynamics and center of gravity as possible.

Very well then. Information has been changed. Thanks for correcting me. It means a lot.

As a piece of art, it's amazing, but it's not dead accurate, especially the jaws, which should be curved upwards. the creast, which is wrongly attached to the head (with the jaws in this position, it should be vertical, creating one convex curve from the upper jaw, over the forhead and up on the crest, with no additional humps), was present only in males, It had solely a display purpose, if it worked as a rudder, females and juveniles would have to have it as well, but they don't. Looking at the ear, ith is either too far back or the eyes and nostrills are too far in the front. The detail i really like for a change is the furry coat, it really gives an impression of a warm-bloodied active creature. Don't worry about the stuff i've just written, having in mind you're more an artist than a paleontologist, and working from memory, this is still a very decent pteranodon!

First off, I'm glad you liked this, but I know it's not accurate since I was going more by memory; I had no references to go by at the time. Yes, I am more of an artist than a paleontologist. However, I always wanted to be a paleo-artist, but my biology grades weren't high enough. I know where the muscles are and how they work, the problem was labelling them.

Are you sure the females and juveniles had no crests? Most references I have them with crests. I believe most paleontologists are undecided upon it. Similarly, most paleontologists aren't sure Dilophosaurus females have crests or not. Some skeletons have been found without crests, but they're unsure if they're females or a if they're a subspecies. I just want to make doubly sure.

I love this one because it reminds me of my Favorite cryptid the ropen. This also has the potential for a kick ass tattoo. One of the things I help people do is find and think of tattoo ideas and you would be surprised at how many times the word "dino" is uttered my way. in most cases they settle for the first thing the find like some stupid clip art. I think i will send them your way when I get this request again. Thanks so much for sharing your art.

I'm glad you liked this. I never thought about this as a potential tattoo. I've only been asked twice to make tattoos for people, but none of them fell through. :\

most of mine never do either, but its a cool feeling when someone comes back and u can see your work on there skin. i could see most of your work as a tattoo for someone or other. people always want something that has never been done b4. thats what i push for myself also.

It has, do you know why? My home computer won't let read my passwords! None of my passwords. I can't sign into DA, YouTube, or any of my emails. It's so FRUSTRATING.

So I'm uploading scans at my cousin's computer at the moment. Hopefully, I'll update more soon.
