Description Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus) is a true eagle (not a hawk) from the tropical Americas, notable for its vivid colors, which differ markedly between adult and immature birds. The male's courtship display is a dive with folded wings, and a climb, sometimes completing a loop. The pair will touch talons in flight as the female rolls on her back. The call is a high-pitched whee-oo-whee-oo. Though locally rare, it is not considered a threatened species due to its wide range.

This guy was gorgeous! He stared at me, fanning his fancy comb, as I sketched him. When I finished, he cocked his head at me, flew off, and made a call. Very majestic!

Medium - 4B graphite.

Thanks! It was difficult for this subject to sit still, particularly birds; but I love his eyes, too.

Thank you! It's amazing that this guy flew in and sat there and flew off when I was done. I always talk to my subjects: "Hello, how are you? I'm going to draw you if that's okay. Hold still... Uh-oh, turn your head, there you go! Good boy! Okay...I'm done. Wanna see?"

That's how it went.

I take my sketchbook to our zoo a lot. I end up talking out loud to the animals half the time, people stare at me, but I can't help it! They're so interesting!

I do that, too! I always have this habit of talking to my subjects, that includes professional models to animals. Yes, people stare, but they just don't understand... In fact, it's odd that the animals seem to respond to you as you talk to them.

I know! Because people don't think animals want communication from them I guess, but I think wild animals in captivity are so used to humans that they really do like it, some species go nuts for it. I find it funny, we have these two sea lions who are, excuse the expression, "attention whores". The otter feeding is right after the sea lion feeding/play show, and when people go over to watch the otters, I stay with the girls and talk to them. They are always very thankful! They'll climb on their rock and pose for the camera and bark for me, just sweeties!

I think it's because they're so used to humans, particularly at zoos. They associate humans with food and attention. Many of them learn to preen and show off and look cute with the attention. Otters are pranksters. When I was trying to do some gestures of the otters, they went up the glass right in front of me and did this water dance and funny faces at me and swam away. I cracked up laughing an fell off the bench.

There was a fish at the aquarium who was extremely curious and loved to stare at the people that stared back at him. Apparently, he looked shiny objects, like jewelry, and press his nose against the glass, beg for the shiny object.

I also recently met a Komodo Dragon who loved to "vogue" for the camera.

Definitely, that's why they have signs that say "Don't feed the animals!"

Oh gosh I had an eel fall in love with me at Petco! My friend said I should buy him but I thought that unfair when we had cats that would torment him. Apparently my hair fascinated him. He wouldn't come out for anyone, but when he saw me he'd come out of hiding and follow my finger around. Fish and water life can be just as appreciative of human attention, I find it so amusing. My gastro used to have a massive ciclid named "Supper" right in the exam room. He had a mate named "Lunch" but he was abusive to her, so they put him in one tank by himself. He also loved the finger movement. And apparently he thought my butt was lovely too, he stared at that quite long when it had to be exposed one time. I couldn't stop laughing after that appointment!

Ciclids are very territorial. The best thing to do is take your fishes out and rearrange things in the tank, including the the gravel pattern, and then introduce both fish back in. They'll get confuse at the change, thinking it's a new territory. They'll bicker for new territory arrangements and then calm down.

I guess they tried it several times and he just kept beating on her, lol. My doctor joked that he had to put them in separate tanks before he got so disgusted that Supper actually became supper.
