Skewer vs Arrowtongue! This has got to be one of the best Darwin IV pictures I've ever seen!

I don't recall those couch-shaped creatures being identified as "planolopes" in the book.

What are the small bipedaliens behind the gyrosprinter in the background? I saw them in the book's waterhole painting as well as the planelops (as you called them). Who would you call those small bipeds?

Well, if there were two giant flying predators flying directly above you that could easily swoop down, skewer you, and suck you dry in midair at any moment now... what would you do?

Based on the size of Darwinian animals, humans would probably be of little interest, except of course to the daggerwrist. That's better then getting skewered by a, well, Skewer.

Ahhh...yesss....the right time and the right place for the confrontaion that Darwin IV biologists have been waiting for! Arrowtongue vs. Skewers! Did you make up some of the organisms, like the planolopes, gillheads, and plains daggerwrist? Or were they mentioned in expedition, for I do not recall these creatures from the fauna of Darwin IV that i have come to know. Great piece, and story, I might add!

Transapient In reply to seatosea [2013-09-07 04:04:52 +0000 UTC]
Thank you.Β (smile)
I believe the threat of skewers is what selected for many creatures with big spikes or spines on Darwin IV, making them difficult to skewer without going in at an awkward angle.Β Anyway, gillheads are mentioned in the book as beings one of the Eosapiens' favorite prey.Β I also remember seeing creatures that looked like the "planolopes" in this drawing, but they were never named, so I just made the name up.Β The plains daggerwrist, however, is something I totally made up.

Ah, I know what you're talking about!Β Hmmm, I never saw any mention or further illustration for that creature.Β I guess it's something that we'd have to speculate on a name.Β Of course, we only see it dead, and it may be named for something it does in life, such as an aspect of its behavior.Β But if I were to name it just by its looks... maybe... the Prongfoot, or... the Crescenthead... something along those lines.

I use to. I colored things with various assortments of colored pencils. But as I matured, and my artistic senses began to settle, I became aware that my coloring attempts with pencils seemed... to sloppy for me. I think it a shame I am unable to express colored works of proper acceptability in traditional mediums. (sad/ashamed face)
But I plan to practice in digital mediums now that I have seen what virtual colorization is capable of. I would like very much to have a go at photoshop in coloring my works. Perhaps around christmas time...
But until then, I am contempt with pencil-only works. It provides opportunities to practice shading, depth, and value. But mark my words, one day I shall bestow my aliens and dinosaurs with color!--or die trying! (I acually hope I don't die trying)

The planolopes are shown in the book, but not under any name (I came up with that one). If you have the book, you could see them in the illustration on the page after the planetary map at the begining. They are those blue things squatting around the waterhole. The plains daggerwrist is totally my creation.

Transapient In reply to zypherax [2011-09-03 04:10:51 +0000 UTC]
Thankyou. Yes, the plains daggerwrist is of my imaginings. But the 'planolopes' are acually based on a creature of Barlowe's. They are not taken of much note at all in the book, and only appear in a small sectioned illustration at the begining. I did give them the name planolope though (after their unique planes of symetry).
