As a huge UMagnus fan, oh man, that's one freaking awesome concept/story by John-Paul, I love it. As for art, very nice as always. Robby earned my respect after he done an awesome job with UM Spotlight. Now, I can link this page/art to my UM page/facebook as to why UM went from the Diaclone color to his TF color. So on Mosaic 2, UM went to his shop then built the armor to cover his blister, lol.

I can hear the conviction in that last "I'm a soldier." Love the art and powerful story.

Oh wow... This is a great comic on Magnus. I love how he describes what a leader and a soldier is.

I love this and the prime variant. not just for the stories, but because, like most magnuses...magni...whatever, even his story is a recolor of prime. not just in the palatte, but in that it is colored by a different view of the world, and of oneself.

Panel 4 - the heat is mottling the paintwork off his arms and the lowar parts of his body. By the time he comes out of the fire, the paint has all blistered off, revealing the colour of the metals underneath.

This is definitely a great piece. I love the transformation of his colors from those of the Diaclone Powered Convoy to his Ultra Magnus colors.

I also particularly like the way the title is a literal translation of his Latin name.

deadcal [2010-06-13 19:38:28 +0000 UTC]

I understand the concept, but having your face go blue after a quick nip into a bonfire is probably one of the things that makes it a bit confusing. Maybe it changes with his emotions, LoL.

Hot Rod: Magnus, your whole head has gone deep pink!!
Magnus: Erm, yeah, I caught Arcee is changing her chassis in the staff room
Hot Rod: Whoop Whoop Whoop

wordmongerer In reply to deadcal [2010-06-13 20:44:08 +0000 UTC]

I answered this a bit earlier, but basically the grey was just a coating, the blue metal was what was underneath once his paintwork was blistered off.

Solrac333 [2010-06-13 05:47:07 +0000 UTC]

Um. So why was he blue?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JZLobo In reply to Solrac333 [2010-06-13 06:43:11 +0000 UTC]

That's was the color scheme of the original Diaclone toy Ultra Magnus is based off.

Solrac333 In reply to JZLobo [2010-06-13 13:47:05 +0000 UTC]

Ah, ok. Was that just a Diaclone figure or was it an actual UM figure?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JZLobo In reply to Solrac333 [2010-06-13 19:33:45 +0000 UTC]

Diaclone. I'm not sure why they opted to recolor the cabin figure white when they transferred the toy into the Transformers line, but I"m sure there's someone around who knows the obscure answer to that question.

wordmongerer In reply to SheepSlave [2010-06-21 13:28:31 +0000 UTC]

One of my desires in doing this was to develop a character who never really had much to do, and explain a little bit why he would never be a great leader, but could be one hell of a soldier.

SheepSlave In reply to wordmongerer [2010-06-21 16:12:12 +0000 UTC]

The way you wrote it does just that - it makes perfect sense. Easier to face death yourself then to send someone else into it!

Interesting how some of the really important Transformers' names are either latin or (I think) greek.

And some are so terrible they're funny. Like Beta Maxx.

Tramp-Graphics In reply to masterofall [2010-06-14 04:51:11 +0000 UTC]

Yes, Latin is used for the "leader" characters, particularly for the Autobots in particular. Both Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus are Latin, as is Fortress Maximus, Nexus Prime, Sentinel Prime, Elita One (derived from "elite", from the Latin "Electus"), Primus, Alpha Trion, Prima, Liege Maximo, Vector Prime, Omega Supreme, etc. All of them are derived from (or are) Latin. Optimus Prime and Elita One are synonymous names. Optimsu Prime literally translates as "Best First". Elita One also translates as "Best First," "Best One", "Chosen One", "Highest One". Ultra Magnus has a similar meaning, literally translating as "Beyond Great", hence the title (the writer must have honed up on his Latin).

fedupN In reply to Tramp-Graphics [2010-06-23 16:56:26 +0000 UTC]

Heh, they noted the same trend on the TF Mirrorverse site in one of the stories.

"First, Best",Optimus Prime
"Beyond Great", Ultra Magnus
"Last, Greatest" Omega Supreme

Quite the ego on those Blue-Optic Warmongers.

I'm going to sound like a horrible person, but when Prowl said "Hot Rod's still in there" I was thinking 'So? Just leave him.'

But I love the story, and you did a great job with Magnus inner thoughts. I assume that Magnus is talking about Optimus right? I'm just a bit confused when he said 'being a leader means sending someone to die in your place. I can never be him.' And if he's talking about Optimus, I just don't see OP sending someone else in his place. Please correct me if I'm wrong. That's the only thing that's stumping me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Tramp-Graphics In reply to Trickster91 [2010-06-14 04:39:35 +0000 UTC]

Being a leader does mean making decisions that affect the lives of other people directly, this includes sending troops into battle; battle in which they could obviously be killed. Thus, leaders have a immensely heavy burden on their shoulders. Thus, a leader does often have to send people to die "in their place" so to speak because a leader is responsible, not only for risking his own life, but the lives of the men under his command. His decisions affect not only himself, but everyone under him.

wordmongerer In reply to Trickster91 [2010-06-12 20:27:19 +0000 UTC]

There's a Prime variant of this story coming soon which shows you how important Hot Rod is... Though if you were a Hot Rod fan, it's going to look like he gets trapped in burning buildings a lot...

As for your point, one of the things about being a leader is sending others to die for you, to send others on missions that they won't come back from. Being a soldier means taking the order to die and following it. How often are Generals, Admirals or Presidents ever called to the heart of the battle. It's why Magnus doesn't want the Matrix when he's offered it in the Movie.

Trickster91 In reply to wordmongerer [2010-06-13 02:20:39 +0000 UTC]

That I do know that rarely leaders go 'into the fire' in general, but the only thing I'm really questioning about is, since I assume Magnus is talking about OP, I know that in fandom Optimus does not like to risk other lives. I guess I'm just being weird. So I take it Magnus is just speaking in a general sense then?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wordmongerer In reply to Trickster91 [2010-06-21 13:25:57 +0000 UTC]

I think Magnus is speaking from his point of view. He's a little bit resentful and a little bit in awe, so he's trying to make himself different to Prime. It doesn't mean that he's "right" per se. People are looking at him and expecting Prime, something he doesn't feel he lives up to, which over time has made him a little edgy on the subject. He's definitely speaking in this with a bit of a chip on his shoulder, and sets him up for needing/wanting the armour later on.

I. Love. This. One. Holy crap I love it so hard. It really got to me - I felt it viscerally. I really relate to Magnus, especially the way he's written here.
This reminds me of one of my favorite PrimeSpeeches Ever, the one in Prime Directive when he talks about being a leader and a soldier...
