In reality has very poor self-esteem and thus fills the void in his heart by spending money he didn't earn and accepting compliments he doesn't deserve.
Although he's quick to trick and use others, he doesn't actually mean harm and cares about people. Usually. He's not above being petty and seeking revenge.
Doesn't want to change anything about himself or accomplish anything, thus doesn't enjoy work or doing boring things either. Only 'claiming credit' part is the good one.
He isn't very intelligent, has no real hobbies or skills, and refuses to do anything about it. It's a miracle that he actually knows how to read and write, albeit poorly.
Makes up stuff to sound smart and parrots others if cornered about it, often being the "yeah that's what I was gonna say" guy.
Keeps no track of money or possessions. Doesn't understand values or satisfaction of earning things, or the fact that money isn't an endless resource that just grows on trees.

Why him retire?

He didn't like the small payout vs danger the Explorers had. Initially, he joined Explorer's Guild specifically to enjoy the fame of a hero, and the income of a king.
But, big surprise - he was faced with life-threatening challenged more than he was enjoying the perks. Philone's dragon illusion, the gulphers, pasquatch... Meri had more than enough of those past few months, choosing to retire and enjoy not risking his life.
