BEGINNINGS 1998 - 2005
Through the years, the rather handsomely designed AIR RAID has posed something of a surprising challenge: Whereas his cartoon design is not really of a terribly complex nature, he has enough curved parts to complicate the rendering of proportions. To my eyes, there is almost something feline about some of his details. Also, his brow, though more angular in shape, has always been a difficult detail to master, even as I enlarged his proportions to accommodate it. I started to brave actual cel-animation-like shading in 2005, but it was demonstrably beyond my reach from the word "Go."
SECOND WIND 2007 - 2011
In 2007, I finally applied myself fully to that task and began getting somewhere, even if I retained the diagonal lines used to create the illusion of a metal surface. The 2009 version was quite a bit larger and more geometrically sound in my view -- and the colours were similarly smoother and more properly shaded for a more cartoon-accurate appearance -- but he nevertheless soon found his way onto a shortlist of characters whose proper scale I had not yet quite reached. When what you could call sort of the third stage of revision began in early 2011, I got a basic idea of a usable scale differential a few characters in, so by the time I got to the second season characters and AIR RAID, the mindfulness of scale was well entrenched in me. However, our fearless friend was in for yet another little tweak as it turned out that he still looked a smidge tinier than his upgraded teammates. Currently, I think he is at last where he needs to be.
