Description Nothing too exciting or surprising here. But quite a bit of fun. These are alternate Han and Luke sculpts we did for the San Diego Comic Con exclusive Stormtrooper disguised figures. (seen here: [link] )

Headsculpts are wax, as per usual. 1/6 scale, so they're about 2"-2.5" tall.

Mark Hamill gives me the TOUGHEST time....such a difficult face to try and capture. Harri is always fun. Don't know if this is one of the better ones we did, but I enjoyed giving him a smirky look.

See if you like 'em. thanks!

Thanks again! Likeness work is a really mixed bag. Sometimes you find something good, sometimes you struggle forever and never quite get it. It's a fun challenge to try, though.

hey thanks! Yeah, sometimes I wish the work wasn't so small. I'd love to give a go at larger scale stuff, if only I can free up some time! I really need to stretch out a bit.

thanks again!

Yeah, fortunately enough! Almost all of the sculptures in my gallery are done for Sideshow Collectibles for their various statues toys and collectibles. It's still a bit of shock that the phone keeps ringing three years into this!

How long does it take you to sculpt a bust?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to aberry89 [2009-07-18 06:55:47 +0000 UTC]

Well, the biggest size I do with Sideshow is about 1/4 scale (the heads are about 4" tall without neck) and those can take a long time to get right. anywhere from 3 weeks to a month on those pieces.

the smaller stuff, like 1/6 scale (about 2.5" tall) take around a week. And the tiny little ones take about the same if they're likenesses.

I'm dying to try a larger scale bust...just some good, rough old fashioned sculpture...

aberry89 In reply to TrevorGrove [2009-07-18 07:42:57 +0000 UTC]

You really should, I would hate to work that small, so tedious! But you seem to be doing fine with it!

Do you just look at pictures when you sculpt? Your likenesses are amazing, I mean if I didn't know better, I would think these were casts of the peoples faces!

(sorry I am asking so many questions! I am so fascinated with the sculpting process!)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to aberry89 [2009-07-18 16:24:02 +0000 UTC]

No problem at all. That's the only way to get the basic info on sculpting. I asked plenty of questions when I was first starting into all of this.

I do look at a LOT of photos when sculpting. Thankfully with most actors and actresses there are a lot of photos to be found, either online or in the dvds. So you can kind of start to discover what you need to make a decent likeness. It's really tough when there aren't a lot of good photos available. Then you have to start filling in the blanks. heh

then I usually print out a sheet of reference (or two or three) one page with all of the front on shots, another page with only profile shots and so forth and so on. You can compare between all of the photos to get an idea of eye spacing, or nose size, or whatever. My computer is here at my sculpting desk, too, so I can scroll through all of my DVD captures at any time.

hope that helps!

Wow! Did you go to school for that, or was this self taught, I mean, your only 22...

Have you ever thought of being a concept artist for movies?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to aberry89 [2009-07-18 23:49:42 +0000 UTC]

That would be cool! Maybe if it's an option in the future, I'd love to try out some kind of movie pre-production work. Design maquettes are still sculpted these days, and usually used as a basis for digital models. anytime I see behind-the-scenes video from WETA or Stan Winston, I just have to start sculpting...inspiring stuff

Oh, and I myself didn't go to school for sculpting. (I kind of feel like the best school is just learning from artists and admiring their work) I still have a lot to learn, but at the moment it's all fun and challenging. the hours can be killer, but I guess that's how you make progress!

you know, I'm not sure. I would bet they are brewing up something incredible. Actually, they usually have a booth at San Diego Comic Con, so I bet there will be something awesome revealed this week.

I guess they'll be going back to Middle Earth for 'the Hobbit'.

oh, yeah, I am sure they will be working on The Hobbit! They better be!

So sad I couldn't go to comic con, I have never gone, and I was planning for this year, but it got sold out so fast! I am a big LOST fan, so I wanted to see their panel, don't think they will have one next year since this is the final season

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to aberry89 [2009-07-20 04:03:21 +0000 UTC]

Man, comic con has become such a bear! I've gone a few times, and it's just...madness. I can't even imagine what it's like at this point. It is fun to see so many cool things and meet artists, though.

I remember kicking myself in 2005's SDCC after learning Joss Whedon and the Firefly cast were doing a panel promoting Serenity. Man that would have been cool to see...but there's so much going on it's impossible to be everywhere you want to be.

I hope you can nab some tickets next year. it's a shame it's become such a tremendous pain in the ass to do! The thing that's really infuriating is the scalpers...

This year is the 30th annual right? So, in a way, I am kinda glad I wont be there, it's going to be a MAD HOUSE!

I should go one of these years thought, to have the experience

TrevorGrove In reply to aberry89 [2009-07-20 16:15:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, one thing Comic Con can always offer is a 24 hour madhouse! it's a chore moving through the crowds sometimes. I think everyone that's interested in popular arts should check it out, though. Lots of cool stuff!

Ha! I have some photos from years ago...I think most of my shots are from 2006...(back before it got too CRAZY) I'll see if any of it is worth putting up somewhere.
I'm sure there will be a LOT of coverage this week on various websites and Flickr accounts. I'm not sure who has the best photos... Sideshow will post some photos each day of the con, that's usually fun to see.

most of these little headsculpts take about a week to complete. These were altered from previous Han and Luke sculpts I had made, but they still took about the same amount of time to accomplish.
