Description It's Toyfair weekend in NY, and NECA is revealing a lot of amazing new toys. I'm really grateful to have been part of a few of them, and I'll be showing some of the heads I worked on.

Put on your sunglasses! "They Live! John Carpenter movies are among my very favorites. "They Live" is as relevant today as it was in the 80's, which is sad, but also wonderful for the film. ha! The idea of making products out of They Live aliens is so delightfully perfect. I love that. heheh.

Here's a look at the final 8" dolls. courtesy of Toyark and their awesome coverage of Toyfair : news.toyark.com/wp-content/upl…

Love these. Β I recently did a sculpt of one of They Live's ghouls as Carpenter calls them. Β I debated about the nose for some time. Β The intent was to make it look skull like with just a hollow cavity but of course being pre-cgi they just gave the people wearing masks black noses. Β I decided to go with a missing nose like they have for the President who appears on tv. Β I then made a removable nose to go with it. Β Working on a stand for this at the moment.Β

Man, I love your "ghoul". (I think that's a better name, I always call them aliens) Great job, and thanks for sharing! I understand your dilemma with the nose. I always just try to capture the practical effects as much as possible, because it feels like a moment in time in filmmaking...but I love the idea of imagining them more as they're intended. Love that you made a removable nose that can plug in. Ha! Terrific! Great work, once again. Thanks for your kind words!

Thanks, that means a great deal coming from you. Β I also made the hair removable so I could make a female version and if I get around to it, a Trump hairdo version. Β I'll post images as soon as I'm done with the base and the rest of it.

That is so cool! I can't wait to see the swap out options and base. It's a great time in the world to rediscover how great "They Live" is.

Thank you! They will be. They were just on display at NY Toyfair, so they are just going into production. They should be released later this year at some point. Release schedules for toys are often changing, but NECA releases things pretty efficiently.

I've gone so overboard with collectibles over the past year. I have so many statues that I bought from Sideshow Collectibles that I have half-a-dozen huge boxes in my garage waiting to be moved to my new house so they can be set up and I have several others on pre-order. It's absurd. I need to get some NECA stuff, though. Your sculpts are awesome. I wish I could hire you to sculpt one of my characters for a figure!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to SHADEDRAWSDOTCOM [2019-02-17 19:52:16 +0000 UTC]

Oh I know the feeling! I have too many things, really, but I get joy from it all still, which is all that matters. I love working on statues too, but it's nice to be making some things now that anyone can afford. Sideshow pieces were really expensive back when I was sculpting with them, but now I see prices for statues that just knock me out... I can't believe how expensive it's gotten.
Best of luck with your move and I hope you enjoy displaying your collection!

I read one of your comments about the movie and it was spot on. It's insane, isn't it, that the movie could come out TODAY without one thing changed, and it would completely apply!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to CainCrow35 [2019-02-26 03:29:52 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely. John Carpenter doesn't do it in the heavy handed way that it would be made today. It'll feel relevant for many more years I'm afraid.

CainCrow35 In reply to TrevorGrove [2019-02-26 05:45:31 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. It's another way Alita was one of the best movies I've seen in years. Rodriguez makes MOVIES not heavy handed bs. It's a great film. Not relevant like They Live but great anyway.

amazing, and true, i second every bit about carpenter and "they live!" you just sayed.

finally got the remastered blu a few weeks ago - been to long, only had an old dvd until then.

the ost is fantastic too btw!

love the doll-heads, great 80's hair.

Oh man, I love John Carpenter music. I've been enjoying his "Lost Themes" albums he makes with his son. Glad you get to enjoy "They Live" on blu-ray, now! Carpenter's classic movies can't be beat.
Thanks so much, as always. It was fun to get the girl some feathery poofy hair.

kopfstoff In reply to TrevorGrove [2019-02-17 13:01:19 +0000 UTC]

yeah, me too! youtube started the lost themes albums

in the ongoing autoplay-list once, really love them too. yeah, "they

live" is sooo good. i did a fanart after i watched it for the first time

"awake", it's ~8 years old and a bit rough in detail but i still like it.

here you go:

i really love the old carpenter movies, especially "mouth of madness",

"they live" and "the thing"... oh and "escape from n.y." ofc. so good.

i can tell you had fun doing these. <3 captured the time and the look and

feel perfectly. i can see those rubber teeth move when the talk.

TrevorGrove In reply to kopfstoff [2019-02-17 18:57:42 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I love your piece! That's a great one, thanks for sharing. It doesn't look dated to me at all.
I'll have to give "Mouth of Madness" another watch, I don't really remember it, although I've seen it. I pretty much love everything Carpenter did in the late 70's and throughout the 80's, although a few of them have slipped by me and I need to see them.
I'm really glad you can see the joy I had working on these! It was such a surprise to be hired to do it. As a likeness guy, nobody really wants you for anything else except that. It's nice NECA recognized that even a creature is a likeness.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kopfstoff In reply to TrevorGrove [2019-02-18 20:29:55 +0000 UTC]

glad you do, thanks! well, i bet you can see those little

details you would do differently now too, when you look at

sculpts that are ~8 years old. same thing i guess. but i

am happy to hear that you think that way!

mouth of madness is awesome, its based on lovecraft if i

recall correctly - and even if not, it's totally lovecraftian

anyway. i lolve the "blue scene", if you remember that?

it wasn't realized with a simple blue lens - every cloth and

every face was coloured blue indeed.

only problem i have is, when you actually see the monsters...

they don't really age that well - especially in that movie

if i recall correctly. :/

i haven't seen that much carpenter movies, beside the ones

i mentioned - but these are brilliant imho.

the heads look awesome, dude! congrats for the job! i can

imagine that its always great to not beeing stereotyped.

i hope some company will realize, that even a mask and a

costume is a likeness and hire you for that friendly neightbor

from 1977 some day (hint, hint ).

TrevorGrove In reply to kopfstoff [2019-02-18 23:11:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, absolutely! It can be hard to look back at a lot of work for that reason....But most people don't mind the flaws the way we do.

Hahah! Yes, exactly, even costumes are likenesses....I've never done anything of Spider-Man, so some day that would be fun to tackle.

John Carpenter movies have a really wonderful quality to them, for sure. I'll definitely check out "Mouth of Madness" again. I don't even remember it beyond Sam Neill. It's been so many years since I saw it. That scene sounds wonderful.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kopfstoff In reply to TrevorGrove [2019-02-20 20:45:43 +0000 UTC]

true, well i guess thats part of the whole journey...

on the other hand, it's great that you can see development

this way.

har! i got you! that's a semi-almost-very-likely-to-be "yes".

some day, i will get that spidey from you, i knew it!

can't wait!

tell me, what you think, when you've rewatched it.
