Hello ! are you selling this head sculpt ? Because I just got my sideshow fig and that head sculpt looks like shit !

TrevorGrove In reply to cjf1983 [2014-07-21 15:44:58 +0000 UTC]

This was sculpted for Sideshow, so unfortunately no.
I am sorry that the head did not turn out on the production figure. I saw someone customize the head and get it looking really good, but unfortunately that's a lot of work to have to do on your figure.

nevertheless you did it so very well
Is the character refferred to an actual person? If he's not maybe it's the reason why you find him hard to grasp.
I always thought there was a bit of Nathan Fillion in him and, of course, a touch of Harrison Ford

You inspired me to do a Sherlock/Cumberbatch sculpt, but it's still in my usual polymer...

Thanks!

No 'aha!" moment yet? Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Wow! Your Cumberbatch Sherlock is fantastic! The eyes are SO perfect. I found him to be impossibly difficult to do well. I would like another crack at it in a larger size some day.

my-immortals In reply to TrevorGrove [2013-07-21 21:22:46 +0000 UTC]

I thought that you did a PERFECT job on Cumberbatch! What on earth didn't you think was done well on yours?! Thanks for the kind comments on mine, but it doesn't hold a candle to yours!

I always think of you while I'm cursing at the wax "He said I'd have an AHA! He promised... AHA already dammit!!"

Thank you for offering your help. I really appreciate it. What I need to do is devote all my time to learning the medium, instead of trying it out for a bit and then throwing it down in disgust and going back to where I'm comfortable. Well, one of these days...

Just keep inspiring us with all of your amazing work!

You know...every time I break outside of my comfort zone with materials.....i realize the comfortable zone worked better. haha! I don't know...just follow your instincts...wax is great, but so is polymer! Thankfully there is no wrong way to do this stuff!

I really needed to film some video of working on a face in wax..it's so hard to put into words. I'll try to figure out how to do it....I'm not a tech guy. Just need to set up the tripod and get some video files to time-lapse.

Thanks on Sherlock! He's SO hard...to be so distinctive, I was shocked to find his face so difficult. I'd really love to do larger busts of them to keep unpainted, but with sculpted in pupils.

I guess you are totally right about the comfort zone. I was trying to find another medium because ProSculpt gets too soft in the tiny details, but I decided that I'm going to do my next sculpt in the grey, hard super sculpey. Just to condition it, you need a steamroller, so with the little bit of experimentation I did, I can see that it will hold tiny details much better than the ProSculpt that I'm used to.

Again, I eagerly look forward to anything you can can document about your technique as I'm sure MANY others will be. Get that tripod up, man!!

The detail you put into your tiny sculptures would be amazing to see larger, and I would imagine would be fun to do and a great asset to your collection!

Again, Thanks!!

I need to make Jesse Pinkman for my Breaking Bad figures....maybe I should set up a tripod and film the creation of that. I promise I'll try to get something done this year for video footage of wax sculpting. I just wish I wasn't so damn busy....I should try to get it done over a couple weekends or something.

That sounds great regarding Sculpey firm. I liked that one best when I used to use Sculpey...I could still never do what you do in it, though....I'm very heavy handed...

Jesse!!! Can't wait for the return of the final BB season.

Oh, I hope you are able to do that recording. *Happy dance...*

Be happy that you are busy. Your talents are sought after!

BTW, I saw what you did with a pumpkin, so methinks you can do about anything with your heavy hands!!

Yes, I think sculpting a Jesse for a time lapse would be perfect....I will plan to do that.

I cannot wait for BrBa to come back....Wow, it's SO close.

I am very grateful to be busy. I just wish I could figure out how to balance myself a bit better...I work way too much.

Pumpkin....ouch....that's a tough medium....Ray Villafane and Andy Bergholtz are magicians.

Can't wait to see how you do it!

Yes, BB on August 11th!! I record the whole thing then have a series marathon at the end. I HATE waiting week to week!

When you work for yourself, as I'm assuming that you do, it is hard to find balance. I hope you are able to take the time to have some fun!

Villafane and Bergholtz are a force to be reckoned with, but your Barnabas pumpkin was amazing!

TrevorGrove In reply to my-immortals [2013-07-27 18:33:08 +0000 UTC]

Good idea....waiting for BB week to week is tough.....but I LOVE the Sunday night ritual. And the anticipation every week.....whew....can't wait.

It is hard to find balance as a freelance professional. I really have trouble making time for me....I'm pretty awful at it to be honest. When I do get time away from work, I suddenly start dreaming of things I want to do for me, and then I'm compelled to work again.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

my-immortals In reply to TrevorGrove [2013-07-27 21:07:00 +0000 UTC]

Now you're making it hard for me to wait for BB!! Ahhhh....

I've been freelancer for a long time, and when I think back to the days when I used to have a 9 to 5, I remember having SO much more free time! You left the job, and the rest of the evening and the weekend was yours. I understand completely your dilemma. It's hard to stop because you only have yourself to answer to. When I'm just worn out, and I take a day and decide to do nothing, or OMG... sit outside and read a book, I beat myself up over it. I really feel like I should be accomplishing something, and when I look at the list of things I have to do for others or want to do for myself, I feel even worse doing nada! Good luck with it... I feel your pain

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to my-immortals [2013-07-28 09:11:53 +0000 UTC]

Exactly...I feel the same as you have. It's the overwhelming guilt of taking a day off that I can't overcome. I'm just always behind schedule. Most of the pressure I feel is totally self imposed, though....my art directors tend to be pretty forgiving.

I, on the other hand......am rarely forgiving of myself.

"Every now and then, say 'What the....'"... well, you know

I'm never gonna forgive Sideshow for not finding you sooner--or, okay, who you've grown up to be in the meantime--before they produced those really awful faces years ago, like the Willow Rosenberg who looked like a caricature of an angry Jewish grandmother, or Anna Valerious as played by Bette Davis at 50 if she'd been playing the Wicked Witch of the West and hadn't yet had her morning coffee.

But I'm also not gonna forgive myself for not being able to stay sane at high-paying jobs long enough to afford the stuff you're doing for them now.

We've all made stinkers, unfortunately...sometimes the sculpt looks okay, but once it's painted and assembled on a figure....it looks anything BUT okay.

The biggest disappointment I've found as an artist, I've finally been able to properly articulate: It takes just as much effort to make a failure as it does to make a success...it seems to be arbitrary which ones work and which ones don't. It drives me CRAZY. I hate it when the ones I work hard on still look bad.

Thanks so much! I would love to sculpt Willow again...I love her. I'd actually love to sculpt all of the earliest Buffy characters...I'm very fond of the early years of that show.

Yeah, it ain't fair that junk takes as much (or more) work than the good stuff does. And while we can sometimes, rarely, rescue something gone wrong, more often every attempt just makes it klunk the harder.

I've certainly labored too hard over some paragraphs and scenes that get worse every fix, kinda like, I dunno, trying to glue a new hand onto a fired ceramic figure, only to drip the glue down the side of the figure, get fuchsia lint stuck to it, gouge the leg when you try to scrape it off, and then find you've chipped the ear in the process of setting it down.

If I were an A-hole, I'd say something trite about April showers and how mistakes are just opportunities, but screw that; problems like that just plain suck.

Best of luck!

It is a shame...and hard for collectors to understand...usually when something really fails, the artist still poured their guts into it....it's like movies....we hate a movie, but.....unfortunately, the people worked really hard on it...

I guess my point being we never know what will work and what will fail...but the effort and dedication rarely changes day to day.

I need to get lessons from ya one day man. This kind of skill level isn't normal in a 26 year old.. this skill level is more in a 50+ year old that spent the last 30-40 years of his life refining his skills. You made a fan boy out of me haha.
