Hi! Thanks for the kind words,
There are a lot of materials you can use for sculpture. For the toy/collectibles industry, it's usually most practical to use hard wax, as the sculpture may sometimes need changes after it's been molded and cast, and wax is great for that. Wax has a bit of a learning curve, and it's greatest strength is with faces and hands and anything that needs minute careful detail.
I think the best material to use if you'd like to venture into sculpture is Super Sculpey. You can usually find it at a craft store. It comes in little 2 lbs bricks. It's a clay that can be baked hard after you're finished.
depending on what you're sculpting, you'll probably want some basic loop tools. I also recommend getting a basic set of dental tools (sounds weird, right?) as they tend to be fantastic for sculpting little things like eyes, mouths, noses. with sculpture, anything can be a potential tool, so you kind of need to find what works for you.
Also, sculpey can be smoothed out with turpenoid. You can brush it onto your sculpture and it softens the clay. you can just use various brushes to smooth areas out, or your fingers. Whatever works. the clay will firm up as the turpenoid evaporates out.
Also, if you're sculpting, say, a bust, and you use Super Sculpey, you'll need to make a very simple armature to put the clay onto. Something as simple as tightly packed tin foil will work. aluminum wire is another great thing to use for armature, because you can bend it into a pose.
There are plenty of other materials and tools out there. TONS of information can be found online if you search out sculpting. I actually have a journal entry on my profile here that goes into wax sculpting and I also included some links.
I hope this helps some! thanks for stopping by,
Trev
