I guess this is the side of Peter that usually creeps everyone out: I can just imagine the poor Lost Boys going without anything for days until good ol' boss would actually bring something to eat. Then again, they could try sneaking up some food from their trips and have a snack when Peter gets like this, but their loyalty makes this option questionable... Peter Pan is quite a dark story if you think about it!

It does seem really creepy if you think about it out of the context of the book, but within the Neverland and the surrealism of the world, it seems to fit quite naturally ^_^ It's like when you read Through the Looking Glass, or any of the fairy tales from before then, such WEIRD stuff happens, but within the context of the world, and especially to a kid, it seems totally normal ^_^

yeah, fairy tales were cruel back then, just have to look at H.C. Andersen's work to get the idea xD I guess what makes it even more creepy for readers is the fact that kids are involved directly in all of this. If it was a group of adults, I guess it wouldn't have the same impact...!

It's not so much cruel as more the morals of that particular country at that time ^_^ Like, all the French versions of the fairy tales were super sexy, but not violent at all. The Grimms took those stories, took out all the sexy, and added in violent. Anderson was later, his stories were a whoooole other thing though too, since it reflected a lot of what was going on in him.
I find that when I read these stories as kids, none of these things bothered me, they only stood out to me as I got older, and I think that's why Peter Pan works for me: the kids do what kids do, and they don't realize it could seem really weird ^_^ I think society has this concept that children are perfect little angels, so when we see them in their natural state, it disturbs us. I mean, it's no Lord of the Flies, that one is REALLY off the rails, but kids can do some really creepy seeming things and just not understand that it could appear so to an adult ^_^

totally agree with you on that: Peter is a boy who basically grew up all his life without a mother to teach him the difference between fantasy and reality, or the true responsabilities of taking care of others. He's probably the most feral kid you'll ever get in a children story without reaching a true level of disturbing content like Lord of the Flies. I have to say tho, he's got quite the psychological build-up for a fairy tale! he has such a complex character, to the point of being almost real to the reader. I loved the book, and I loved the characters and how ellaborate they were, but I can't help feeling a little sad for all of them because of the same reasons: they feel so real I can actually have simpathy for them and walk a mile or two in their shoes, and then I realize all of their struggles, inocent bliss and... well... you don't see that kind of literatura anymore, not even in adult books Sorry for my long rant, I guess Peter gets the best out of everyone no matter your age!
