Description Watch out for those Romulan girls. They carry knives.

Lately I've been experimenting with adding backgrounds to my drawings. Not sure if I like this one or not; can't decide if it overwhelms the figure. What do you think, fellow Deviants?

Thanks to Vampress-Stock for the use of her lovely images, here and here , as reference photos.

Nice work- I find lighting on hair so hard to do.  Do you have any tips on how to do it?

What difficulty are you having? Is it where to place the highlights and shadows, or how to make the highlights and shadows look like hair instead of a solid surface?

I think that I have trouble placing the highlights...without making it look like a blank spot too!

Sorry for the delay answering. I needed to take some time to think about the answer, since I've been doing this for so long it's sort of automatic. Plus, real life just keeps getting in the way of the Internet.

For placing highlights, I usually rely on 1) a photo reference when possible, and 2) general principles of light and shadow. I try imagine where the light is coming from, and how it will hit the head. There will usually be highlights where the head curves out toward the light, or where the hair curls or projects away from the head. Where the head curves in, or where the curl curves in toward the head, there will usually be a shadow.

That said, I've noticed that in your painting style, your use of highlights and shadows is very subtle. The "blank spot" you said you're getting might just be from putting in highlights that are too strong for the overall painting. Highlights don't have to be super-light. You have some nice subtle effects on the back of Victoria's head in "Victor and Victoria" as well as in "Anton and Sophia," so I think you're already on the right track.

Oh this is so gorgeous I don't even know what to say so early in the day. Only, I hope you make more, because you are really, really good.

Thank you so much! I do have some other pictures I'm working on, slowly and sporadically. It's just hard for me to find much time to draw right now. Non-art priorities just eat up most of my time these days. But with encouragement like yours, perhaps I can try harder to find the time. Thanks again.

I can fully sympathize with it being hard to find the time to do art, god knows I often have trouble finding the time to write. But you really should, even if it's just doodles. As I said you're very good and I'd love to see more .

Though I rather love BG-less images, I still very much love this one! But still the best thing about is the girl. She's very nice! I love seeing pictures of Romulans which don't adhere to the cliche of always accurate military haircut and always accurate uniform... And nice drawing in the technical sense, too!

Thanks so much for commenting and faving. I really appreciate your kind words, and that you took the time.

There are billions of Romulans in the Empire, and some of them have to be civilians... and at least a few of those have to have some fashion sense! Those are the ones I like to draw.

Yeah, that's right! And neither are all Romulans blindly alligned. If you have the time, maybe you could check out my Romulan. She's waering a very uniform-eske clothing, but at least she's not on the Stellam Shiar's side xD

Nice work!   To my untrained eye, the background seems perfectly fine.

So...does this daring little lady have a name?

No name, no backstory. Just a drawing I wanted to do.
