Description "A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory." -- Leonard Nimoy

Media: Watercolor and colored pencil on hot press paper,  approx. 8"x12". Digitally corrected and adjusted in CS2.

Pose reference: this photo by Gilliann   .

The challenge: Create a work of Star Trek art using all the colors of the rainbow. No non-canon characters allowed.  (You can see all the contest entries at StarTrek-Club. )

So then, how to put all those colors into a single work, without painting a literal rainbow? Well, nothing is more colorful than a flower garden. My first idea was to do a picture of Amanda in her garden with toddler Spock. Unfortunately, most of the photo references available were too Madonna-and-child for my purposes. I kept the garden idea, but went with Spock and Uhura instead, because a rose garden lends itself so naturally to romantic themes. However, I'm not much of a portrait artist (still working on that), so I didn't attempt exact likenesses. They're just sort of generic versions of the characters.

This is the most ambitious watercolor I've ever done. In spite of a number of errors, I'm fairly satisfied with the final result, especially considering all the "firsts" in this picture (my first floral/garden scene, first attempt at a dark skin tone in watercolor, first use of two figures encroaching in each other's space). Hope you all enjoy this one!

This is so beautiful! I never thought about Amanda having a garden on Vulcan before, but I'm sure she did.

Thanks! I'm so glad you like it. I can't claim credit for the idea of Amanda having a garden on Vulcan, though. Apparently AC Crispin started the idea in her novel, "Sarek," and it really caught on with all the Sarek/Amanda fanfic writers.

You're very welcome. And ah, that sounds like a neat book!

I always loved Amanda's scene in The Voyage Home. The Vulcan sculpture in the room was so pretty. I wish we had gotten to see actual Vulcan gardens in the TOS source material too....

It's fantastic!  I've always liked the Spock/Uhura ship--even before they put it in a movie!  This is so cute, like a stolen kiss in a brief moment away from Amanda and Sarek's supervision.  Yet, somehow...I think they've already guessed of their son's amour.  Love it!

So it would seem! And you learn a lot by messing up the first two.

Wow, beautiful watercolour painting!    The palette suits the romantic theme very well indeed. Spock's expression here is so tender   (I wish I had some talent with traditional media! )

Thanks so much! I wish I had your skill at drawing portraits! I showed "Lost to the Captain" to my husband, and he was extremely impressed. His exact words were, "Really phenomenal." We both agreed that you would do very well with traditional media if you ever chose to go that route. You've clearly got the artistry; digital or traditional is just a question of which tool you choose to express that artistry for any given piece of work.

Thanks for the awesome compliment! But I think traditional media is really difficult to manipulate.  I have to make SO many revisions to my pieces that I destroy any paper I work with!

I can certainly relate to that. I had to go in and Photoshop out a few stubborn paint drips on this one. It seems to be some kind of law that watercolor only splashes into areas where you can't cover it up with more watercolor, in this case, the sky.
